U.S. Senator Brian Schatz and <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> Director David Applegate also attended.<\/p>\n<p>The facility, which will be located on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo campus, will house the <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\">Hawaiian Volcano Observatory<\/a> and the <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/pacific-island-ecosystems-research-center\">Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_179577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179577\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-usgs-uh-volcano-monitoring-facility-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"exterior of building\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-179577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-usgs-uh-volcano-monitoring-facility-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-usgs-uh-volcano-monitoring-facility-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-usgs-uh-volcano-monitoring-facility-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-179577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> facility at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We selected this location because of its unique qualities and partnership opportunities,&rdquo; Applegate said. &ldquo;One quality in particular that is critical to our future success is access to a very precious resource: students who can become our next-generation workforce, helping bring science to bear on some of the most challenging issues facing our nation and the planet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, called a k&#299;paepae, was coordinated by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> personnel. The k&#299;paepae included <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> and university staff and students, and focused on coming together in the new location.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo has a long and rewarding relationship with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, and I am excited for the additional opportunities their presence on campus will have for research partnerships and student internships,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Chancellor Bonnie D. The observatory was previously located in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Volcanoes National Park, near the active volcanoes of K&#299;lauea, Mauna Loa, <span aria-label=\"Loihi\">L&#333;&#699;ihi<\/span> and Hual&#257;lai. The observatory\u2019s previous facility was irreparably damaged during the 2018 K&#299;lauea eruption.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center conducts research to support management and conservation of biological resources in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and other Pacific locations. This includes scientific studies of imperiled species, invasive species and plant diseases such as Rapid \u2018&#332;hi\u2018a Death.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Partnership and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do.
