He remains the winningest men\u2019s basketball head coach (against college teams) in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo history with a 218-87 record (his first three seasons were prior to <abbr>NAIA<\/abbr> membership).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178863\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178863\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-athletics-in-memoriam-yagi-6-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Jimmy Yagi standing in front of 3 N A I A basketball championship banners\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-178863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-athletics-in-memoriam-yagi-6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-athletics-in-memoriam-yagi-6-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/hilo-athletics-in-memoriam-yagi-6.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Athletics)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Coach Yagi is a beloved and iconic figure in the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as a legendary coach, educator and mentor,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen. &ldquo;He is a legend in the coaching profession and a giant of a human being. His passing is a tremendous loss for our community, but we know he leaves a legacy that will live on through all the lives he has touched.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yagi had a 252-126 career overall record and coached the very first Vulcan team to compete at the <abbr>NAIA<\/abbr> level in 1976&#8211;77. He took the Vulcans to the <abbr>NAIA<\/abbr> national tournament three times and put <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo basketball on the map as the biggest game in town.<\/p>\n<p>Games at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium often sold all 3,000 seats, and Yagi wasn&#8217;t afraid to bring in Division <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> teams to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. His impact on this community will never be forgotten.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was so honored to have had Coach Yagi in my life. He was my coach and later a coaching colleague, mentor and friend,&rdquo; former <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo baseball Head Coach Joey Estrella said. &ldquo;Words cannot describe what he meant to me and the influence he had on my life in the most positive way. I will be forever grateful. Every time we worked together, he made me feel special. He was a pleasure to be around and influenced so many people. Yagi and Goya were instrumental in helping develop the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo athletics program and guiding its success in the <abbr>NAIA<\/abbr> as well as establishing the popular Vulcans <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Basketball School.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A businessman turned coach, Jimmy found his real passion in coaching and teaching basketball,&rdquo; Goya said. &ldquo;His dedication and commitment to basketball is second to none. For Jimmy, coaching went far beyond winning and losing. His genuine care and personal relationship with each individual made him special and led him to an accomplished and illustrious career. Basketball became his tool to teach life&#8217;s skills to his players and the youth in his clinics.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For six decades, Yagi led camps across the islands in what is now called the Jimmy Yagi Basketball Camp. It&#8217;s all about teaching them the fundamentals of basketball and life. If we can help them believe a little more in themselves, hopefully it will carry on into other areas.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yagi is a 1957 graduate of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Shidler College of Business. A scholar-athlete himself, Yagi played basketball for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<h2>The Yagi legacy lives on<\/h2>\n<p>The Yagi family established the<a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/12554904\"> Coach Jimmy Yagi Scholarship<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo. &ldquo;Sports can be such an important part of a student\u2019s education, but working to achieve academic excellence is also critically important,&rdquo; Yagi once said. &ldquo;We believe Vulcan Athletics can help bring new focus to academic excellence and help to raise standards on campus at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Coach Yagi and Jeanne also established the <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/12527902\">James S. and Kameko Yagi\/Sadao and Bessie Y. Nishida Scholarship<\/a> in honor of their parents, to benefit <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island high school graduates attending <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo. They were involved in many community civic groups and served as volunteers for many local organizations.<\/p>\n<p>He leaves behind wife Jeanne and sons Brady and Kirby.
