Developed by two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> graduate students, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmrphawaii.org\/smmile\">Summer Marine Mammal Intensive Learning Experience<\/a> (<abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr>) program ran from June 2&#8211;11 and was free for the participants.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> has been an amazing opportunity, a bunch of once-in-a-lifetime experiences and just something I wouldn\u2019t have got if I hadn\u2019t joined this program,&rdquo; said Hulali Patacsil, an incoming senior at Kealakehe High School on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve incoming high school juniors and seniors participated in the <abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> program, which was developed by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Marine Biology Graduate Program <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> students Kirby Parnell and Brijonnay Madrigal. This is the second year Parnell and Madrigal have run the <abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> is really important for high school students because it gets them that hands on opportunity to learn about different facets of marine science,&rdquo; said Madrigal. &ldquo;And I think engaging them early on will allow them to see potential career paths they might want to pursue in the future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178666\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178666\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"woman talking\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-178666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brijonnay Madrigal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> provides an opportunity for underrepresented high school students to learn about marine mammal science, marine protected areas and conservation. Priority was given to Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander high school students to improve their representation rates in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> and the field of marine mammalogy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> connects you to a lot of different experts in the field and also exposes you to a lot of different jobs,&rdquo; said Caleb Collabo, an incoming senior at Waipahu High School. &ldquo;It&#8217;s also very hands-on so you get to try out and see a lot of what you learn about throughout the entire program.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Overnight experience at center of research<\/h2>\n<p>Participants stayed overnight on Moku o <span aria-label=\"Loe\">Lo&#699;e<\/span> in the dormitories for the duration of the program.<\/p>\n<p>High school students had hands-on learning opportunities through guest lectures, training, field trips and workshops throughout the week. Topics covered during the program included: acoustics, unmanned aerial vehicles, tagging, population studies, photo identification, stranding response, and conservation\/management.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178669\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178669\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"students practice tagging animals\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-178669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students practice tagging exercise.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon completing the <abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> program high school students gain basic knowledge of marine mammals, with a focus on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> marine mammals; applicable skills for studying marine mammals in the field and in human-care facilities; opportunities to network with undergraduate and graduate students, experts and organizations that participate in science-based conservation; and to learn to appreciate the diversity of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> marine mammals.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This program is free,&rdquo; said Parnell. &ldquo;We were able to secure funding from multiple different sources, federal and state grants. So it\u2019s just a really good opportunity for our local students to be introduced to marine mammal science.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"students practice tagging animals\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-178667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-himb-smmile-2023-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> is funded by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the Marine Mammal Commission, an Inclusion, Diversity, Access and Success grant from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Student Equity Excellence and Diversity Office, and The Next Swell. The program has also received funding through a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Bay Watershed Education and Training grant for the next two years (2024 and 2025). Hawaiian Airlines also donated flight miles for the neighboring island high school students to travel to <span aria-label=\"Oahu.\">O&#699;ahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> high schools that have students participating in <abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> include: Kamehameha Schools Kap&#257;lama, Pearl City High School, Moanalua High School, Kealakehe High School, King Kekaulike High School, <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> High School, <span aria-label=\"Kapaa\">Kapa&#699;a<\/span> High School, <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> High School, James B.
