The 40th <abbr>MOP<\/abbr> Symposium featured the research and internship work of 19 students from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The hybrid format allowed students and faculty from abroad to participate. Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> is also seeking to draw more attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.leeward.hawaii.edu\/liberal-arts\/marine-option-program-academic-subject-certificate\">its campus\u2019 program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With its proximity to wetlands and the harbor, Leeward is an ideal setting for a gathering of Marine Option Program students and coordinators from across the state,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>MOP<\/abbr> Director Cindy Hunter. &ldquo;We hope to see <abbr>MOP<\/abbr> grow at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Student awardees included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Best Research Paper: Caden Christensen (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo), &ldquo;High Elevation Surveys for <span aria-label=\"uau\">&#699;ua&#699;u<\/span> Burrows on Mauna Kea&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>Best Internship Paper: Chloe Malou (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo), &ldquo;University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo Seawords Liaison&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>Best Poster: Emma DeBenedictis (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), &ldquo;Enhancing Marine Stewardship Through Various Forms of Education Outreach&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>John P. Craven Award: Hayley Luke (Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>), &ldquo;He <span aria-label=\"Pukoa\">P&#363;ko&#699;a<\/span> Kani <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span>&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li><abbr>PACON<\/abbr> International, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Chapter, <abbr>MOP<\/abbr> Symposium Award: Madison Coelho (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo), &ldquo;Developing Theodolite Workshops For <abbr>MOP<\/abbr> And Secondary Students&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>Sherwood Maynard Award for Ocean Impact: Sidney Lewis (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo), &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island Fishing Line Recycling &#38; Public Education Program&rdquo;<\/li>\n<li>Anna Toy Ng Memorial <abbr>MOP<\/abbr> Scholarship: Savannah Crosby (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa) and Sidney Lewis (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The keynote speaker was Athline Clark, who recently retired as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s superintendent for the Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea Marine National Monument, and holds a master\u2019s degree in urban and regional planning from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.
