University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> men’s tennis player Andre Ilagan became the program’s first All-American after recording a straight-set win over Texas’ Siem Woldeab, 7-5, 6-4 in the NCAA<\/abbr> Men’s Singles Championships’ Round of 32, May 23.<\/p>\n

With the win, Ilagan punched his ticket into the round of 16 on Wednesday, May 24, at the USTA<\/abbr> National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Ilagan will face the winner of the Alexander Bernard (Ohio State) vs<\/abbr>. Samir Banerjee (Stanford). Time is TBD<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

With the round of 32 win, Ilagan secured a spot in the round of 16 which automatically garnered him ITA<\/abbr> All-America honors. UH<\/abbr> women’s tennis’ Petra Melounova is the only other UH<\/abbr> tennis player to achieve All-America status in 2019.<\/p>\n

The senior from Honolulu and Farrington High School graduate is the first UH<\/abbr> men’s tennis player to ever win at the NCAA<\/abbr> Championships. Ilagan who is ranked No<\/abbr>. 65 in the most recent ITA<\/abbr> poll has now defeated two higher ranked players in a row—44th-ranked Patrick Maloney of Michigan and 54th-ranked Siem Woldeab of Texas. This season, Ilagan has knocked off five ranked players.<\/p>\n
