It was a vibrant day of hula, oli (chant), mele (song) and learning that honored the renowned teacher, dancer, singer and composer&#8212;a day of living out Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s rich legacy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Students preparing to perform hula\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-177404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> Foundation hosted the event in Keaukaha to honor the cultural icon, who is now memorialized in the Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> quarter. Students came from Ka &#699;Umeke <span aria-label=\"Kaeo\">K&#257;&#699;eo<\/span> Hawaiian Language Immersion Public Charter School, Keaukaha Elementary School and Ke Ana <span aria-label=\"Laahana\">La&#699;ahana<\/span> Public Charter School.<\/p>\n<p>The festivities included Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and representatives from the U.S. Mint, the Smithsonian Women\u2019s History Museum and the National Museum for the American Indian.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just me being able to get out there and to hula for my grandmother to honor her in the ways of hula that are meant for her that really impacted me pretty hard today,&rdquo; said great grandson Keao Killion, a Ka &#699;Umeke <span aria-label=\"Kaeo\">K&#257;&#699;eo<\/span> Hawaiian Language Immersion Public Charter School student. &ldquo;Because of the fact that she left all these hulas, all of these dances, all of these songs, meles, not only for us to know but to pass on to our next generation and for us to teach, not for us to hold on to it or to let it die out.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Kaniaulono H\u0101pai, a 10th grader, said, &ldquo;I felt very humbled to dance in front of her kids because this is their legacy, this is Aunty Edith\u2019s legacy, and I just wanted to make sure that everything happened as it should happen because this is our one chance to honor her.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s legacy: Just do it<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Women performing hula\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-177406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> taught at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College in the 1970s. Today, her granddaughter Huihui Kanahele-Mossman serves as executive director of Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> Foundation and Âé¶¹´«Ã½Hilo kuleana (responsibility) and curriculum development coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it&#8217;s important for people to know that much like grandma did, we need to participate in &#699;\u0101ina (land), we need to know how to participate in &#699;\u0101ina through chant, through hula, through ceremony because that was one of the strongest points that she made while she was alive,&rdquo; Kanahele-Mossman said. &ldquo;What I want people to know is go ahead and feel free to do that at any point in time that they need to do that because that&#8217;s what she wanted part of her legacy to be.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s family recently established the Hale Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> Fund with the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Foundation, in recognition of Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s numerous contributions toward the promotion of Native Hawaiians\u2019 educational pursuits. The fund provides support to students enrolled at any campus within the Âé¶¹´«Ã½System with a preference for students of Native Hawaiian ancestry. <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/13026904\">Donations to the Hale Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> Fund can be made via the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Always seek knowledge<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Teachers explaining the Edith Kanakaole quarter\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-177405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/hilo-kanakaole-celebration-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Keaukaha area is special and is where Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> helped to create a Hawaiian language program for a public school to perpetuate the Hawaiian language.<\/p>\n<p>Workshops for the day included: hei, the skill of creating string figures; <span aria-label=\"palaie\">pala&#699;ie<\/span>, the loop and ball game; the hula &ldquo;E komo ma loko a o <span aria-label=\"Halemaumau\">Halema&#699;uma&#699;u<\/span>,&rdquo; original choreography by Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>; &ldquo;Pua Melie,&rdquo; another of Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span>\u2019s famous songs; introduction to the art of &#699;ulana (weaving) lauhala (pandanus) leaves; and a virtual <span aria-label=\"huakai\">huaka&#699;i<\/span> (trip) through Keaukaha, exploring the place names Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> describes and writes about in her song, &ldquo;N\u0101 Pana Kaulana O Keaukaha.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Remembering Aunty Edith is something very important to our community of Keaukaha, because she&#8217;s done so much, not only for the whole world but especially for us individually,&rdquo;
