On May 10, National School Nurse Day, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s public school nurses are recognized for their key roles in helping students, schools and families in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>For nearly a decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/hawaii-keiki\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki: Healthy and Ready to Learn<\/a>, a partnership between the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\">Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education<\/a> (<abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr>), has been placing school nurses in public schools to provide no-cost school-based health services to students. Having an in-person presence on campus and seeing the parents and their child face-to-face is critical to getting students the healthcare they need. <\/p>\n<p><strong><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki Impact (August 2022&#8211;March 2023):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>7,998 health room visits to a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki nurse by <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> students<\/li>\n<li>69&#37; of students returned to class instead of being sent home after visiting a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki nurse<\/li>\n<li>151 screening events of 13,408 dental and vision screenings in collaboration with community partners<\/li>\n<li>429 telehealth appointments for <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> students through <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki Virtual Keiki Care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_177276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177276\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-adele-214x300.png\" alt=\"nurse smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-177276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-adele-214x300.png 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-adele-93x130.png 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-adele.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-177276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adele Mier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adele Mier is a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki registered nurse who has been based at N\u0101n\u0101kuli Elementary School for the past six years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For students whose parents and guardians consent to care, we can provide clinic visits, connect students to a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki nurse practitioner for a virtual appointment, and we do emergency action plans if they come in with a chronic condition already existing or something that was identified during their screening. And beyond the students, we support families and our communities through health education and outreach,&rdquo; Mier said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Providing health screenings to students on-campus is also very important,&rdquo; she added. &ldquo;During past health screenings, we identified students with severe eye problems. Subsequently, students were referred and they received treatment early which positively impacted the students and their families.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Evolved roles from pandemic<\/h2>\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of the school nurse rapidly evolved to include the use of telehealth technology to address students&#8217; physical, as well as mental health needs. Mental health concerns for youth have increased after the challenges brought by the pandemic, including remote learning, increased isolation and family stress. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As school nurses, we talk a lot with students to make sure they are okay emotionally and can provide mental health support and make referrals if needed,&rdquo; Mier said. &ldquo;It is nice to know that the program can now connect these students with a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki mental health nurse practitioner virtually allowing the child to stay in school but also get the necessary assessments and support they need.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_177278\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-177278\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-patient-300x169.png\" alt=\"nurse with parent and child\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-177278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-patient-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-patient-130x73.png 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-nursing-mier-patient.png 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-177278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mier with a student and parent in the health room.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki Program was originally launched in 2014 with four school nurses. With the increased need for school nursing support, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Keiki Program now serves 258 schools statewide with 17 nurse practitioners (<abbr>APRN<\/abbr>s), two mental health nurse practitioners and 42 registered nurses.
