{"id":17698,"date":"2013-06-19T15:37:53","date_gmt":"2013-06-20T01:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=17698"},"modified":"2021-11-23T13:39:51","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T23:39:51","slug":"kapiolani-goes-for-culinary-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/06\/19\/kapiolani-goes-for-culinary-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi\u02bbolani<\/span> goes for culinary gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BUN3pOXnPZE\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A team of <a href=\"http:\/\/culinary.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\">culinary students<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/page\/home\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> is headed to Las Vegas, Nevada in mid-July for the national championships of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acfchefs.org\/ACF\/Events\/Competitions\/StudentTeam\/ACF\/Events\/Competitions\/StudentTeam\/\">American Culinary Federation Student Team competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just the thought of like winning nationals, it is so motivating, it&#8217;s just like, unbelievable to have this opportunity,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> team member <strong>Joy Yamane<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>They earned it. The team&#8212;Yamane, <strong>Ian Sagayaga<\/strong>, <strong>Emi Akiyama<\/strong>, <strong>Bickna Sim<\/strong> and <strong>Hwanjae Lee<\/strong>&#8212;won the state championships in December and then in April, topped six other states to win the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acfchefs.org\/ACF\/Events\/Regional\/Western\/ACF\/Events\/Regional\/Western\/\">western regionals<\/a> in Idaho. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This team is very young,&rdquo; said team coach <strong>Grant Sato<\/strong>, a chef and instructor from the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Culinary Arts program. &ldquo;They had almost no experience, and they saved their best performance for last so their best run through was at the regional.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Now the focus is on preparing for the nationals and taking advantage of what they do best. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We all work well together,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> team member Sagayaga. &ldquo;We have no arguments, nothing at all. We all help each other. If someone does something wrong we just improvise and just think of something and we&#8217;ll fix it instantly.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think their teamwork is the key that is setting them apart from all other teams from the past,&rdquo; said Sato. <\/p>\n<p>The team is truly representing the 50th state. The menu for the national competition showcases <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> regional cuisine and products. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Everything that we have on our plate, from the protein to the vegetables to as much as you could of everything, is grown or produced locally,&rdquo; said Sato. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A lot of people on the mainland, they don&#8217;t really get to use these products that much, so we want to teach them or show them what we do in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Yamane. <\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College has proven it is no flash in the pan, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/malamalama\/2009\/10\/team-hawaii\/?pid=211\">winning the national championship in 2009<\/a> and consistently placing high in the regionals each year. <\/p>\n<p>And each year, supporters like Y. Hata, Dura Contractors, D.
