The theme for this year\u2019s celebration was Kanu <span aria-label=\"ia\">&#699;ia<\/span> Ka Huli, Ulu Ka <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (planting seeds and cultivating the environment).<\/p>\n<p>Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai (the garden of Niuhelewai) started with the planting of more than 20 varieties of Hawaiian kalo (taro) in March 2011 with the support of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. It is an on-campus venue of learning for students, staff and community groups to increase exposure and understanding of traditional Hawaiian <span aria-label=\"ike\">&#699;ike<\/span> (knowledge) such as subsistence farming in an urban community and sustainable stewardship.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176892\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-lei-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"people making lei\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-176892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-lei-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-lei-98x130.jpg 98w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-lei.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lei making activity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every April, when the kalo is ready to harvest, Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> celebrates the m&#257;la with an annual <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea.\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a.<\/span> This year marks 11 years since the first kalo harvest from Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai in April 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> also coincides with Earth Day celebrations and the m&#257;la promotes the organic practices of traditional <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Alapaki Luke, K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> chair and Hawaiian Programs Division coordinator (N&#257; Papa <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>). &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> brings the campus together to participate in or learn about Hawaiian cultural activities along with other cultural\/sustainability activities on campus and in the community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> celebration featured lunch (kalua pig, sweet potato, kulolo) cooked in the imu (earthen oven), live entertainment, a plant seedling giveaway, lei making, a resource fair and Makahiki games. The free, four-day event also included numerous activities\u2014hands-on sustainable workshops and seminars, informative sessions about native wildlife and a Trash 2 Treasure competition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176891\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-coconut-cup-making-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people watching man holding coconut\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-176891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-coconut-cup-making-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-coconut-cup-making-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/honolulu-hoolaulea-coconut-cup-making.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coconut cup making class<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Honolulu Community College\u2019s annual <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> celebrates the harvest from Ka M&#257;la o Niuhelewai which also honors the earlier traditional uses of this <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> that our campus is located within,&rdquo; said Luke. &ldquo;Niuhelewai stream used to flow within our campus boundaries and is now diverted up mauka to the Kap&#257;lama canal. In the Land Commission Awards (<abbr>LCA<\/abbr>), there were native tenants that maintained 45 <span aria-label=\"loi\">lo&#699;i<\/span> (taro patches with water) recorded in the <abbr>LCA<\/abbr>. We have returned a small amount of food grown in this area to feed our campus every April and promote traditional and customary practices such as the imu (earthen oven) that cooks the food for <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>.
