The <abbr>UH<\/abbr>-based team co-designed the new wayfinding system together with Nalani <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka\u02bbole<\/span>, Sig Zane, and <span aria-label=\"KUhao\">K\u016bha\u02bbo<\/span> Zane of Sig Zane Designs.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently two signs in place in front of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/01\/19\/isabella-aiona-abbott-life-sciences-building\/\">Isabella Aiona Abbott Life Sciences Building<\/a> and Bilger Hall. Ultimately, signs featuring the new design will be placed in front of a total of 21 of the campus\u2019 main buildings in a multi-phase project expected to be completed by 2030.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176836\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-176836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-brian-strawn-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"man talking by television\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-brian-strawn-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-brian-strawn-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-brian-strawn.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brian Strawn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe signs invite viewers to take part in k\u0101naka <span aria-label=\"oiwi\">\u02bb\u014diwi<\/span> body alignment practices like those that traditionally occur at some heiau (temples). Each sign will gesture toward different landmarks in and around M\u0101noa, such as the <span aria-label=\"Waahila\">Wa\u02bbahila<\/span> Ridge or <span aria-label=\"Leahi\">L\u0113\u02bbahi<\/span> (Diamond Head) on the coast. The project aligns with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s commitment to being a <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=12\">Native Hawaiian Place of Learning (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>)<\/a> that includes evoking the importance of place among haum\u0101na (students), staff, faculty and the community.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a medallion at each sign with a QR code that will link to an interactive website with information about the specific location.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176833\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-176833\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-kuhao-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-kuhao-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-kuhao-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/manoa-wayfinding-kuhao.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"KUhao\">K\u016bha\u02bbo<\/span> Zane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWith this signage you\u2019ll be able to not only find your way around campus but also be educated about what are the important Indigenous places within this area, or within this <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua\u02bba<\/span> of M\u0101noa,\u201d said <span aria-label=\"KUhao\">K\u016bha\u02bbo<\/span> Zane at Sig Zane Designs, who co-designed the signage.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Ili\">\u02bbIli<\/span> <span aria-label=\"aina,\">\u02bb\u0101ina,<\/span> subdivisions<\/h2>\n<p>K\u0101naka <span aria-label=\"oiwi\">\u02bb\u014diwi<\/span> divided the islands into <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua\u02bba<\/span> (land division usually extending from the mountains to the sea) that were made up of subdivisions called <span aria-label=\"ili\">\u02bbili<\/span> <span aria-label=\"aina,\">\u02bb\u0101ina,<\/span> each with its own name and purpose.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/19\/signage-features-ancient-place-names\/\">New M\u0101noa signage features ancient place names, cultural knowledge<\/a>, July 2022<\/span>According to an 1882 historical map of M\u0101noa, multiple <span aria-label=\"ili\">\u02bbili<\/span> <span aria-label=\"aina\">\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span> intersect on the M\u0101noa campus. The new signs will feature the building\u2019s name and the name of the <span aria-label=\"ili\">\u02bbili<\/span> <span aria-label=\"aina\">\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span> the building is located in.
