In the last year, 3,268 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students have searched for basic needs resources, with 17,047 searches conducted on <a href=\"http:\/\/findhelp.org\">findhelp.org<\/a>. Housing, money and food make up the highest percentage of those searches.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> continues to address the increasing demand for resources, and expanded its first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/star.hawaii.edu\/virtual-kiosk\/app.jsp#!\/kiosk?unit=858\">Virtual Basic Needs Caf\u00e9<\/a> this spring. The new tool, available to students outside of regular business hours, connects them to professional staff to access basic needs resources, including nutritious food, secure housing, reliable transportation, mental and physical health support, and\/or financial stability support.<\/p>\n<p>Previously only available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/manoa\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/windward\/\">Windward Community College<\/a>, the caf\u00e9 is now available to students at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/leeward\/\">Leeward <abbr title=\"community college\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/hawaii\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a>, with plans to onboard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/hilo\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/kauai\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/honolulu\/\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/kapiolani\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/maui\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a> in the coming weeks and plans to onboard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/west-oahu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> by the end of the summer.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/19\/video-basic-needs-insecurity-resources\/\">Basic needs insecurity, available resources highlighted in new video<\/a>, July 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 operates Sunday to Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. and provides a safe and welcoming space for students. Students are also welcome to reach out to caf\u00e9 staff via email at <a href=\"mailto:uhsbn@hawaii.edu\">uhsbn@hawaii.edu<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Virtual Basic Needs Caf\u00e9 was developed to help provide an alternative way for students to connect with campus resources in the evening hours, which is when we were told some students have more free time to tend to their needs after fulfilling work, family and other obligations,\u201d said <strong>Didar Hossain <\/strong>a staff member with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Virtual Basic Needs Caf\u00e9 and doctoral student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/thompson\/\">Thompson School of Social Work &#38; Public Health<\/a>. &ldquo;Students often experience basic needs insecurity and they need appropriate resources to address these needs. The caf\u00e9 allows students to reach out virtually to navigate the resources related to basic needs that might play a significant role in their journey of higher education,&rdquo; he said. <\/p>\n<p>A student who utilized the virtual cafe this semester, said &ldquo;I found the resources helpful to navigate an on campus job during the summer, including the online student employment application <abbr>SECE<\/abbr>, which is a great portal for searching on campus jobs. I really appreciate [the virtual basic needs cafe] provided me with the link to a number of job searching websites.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Virtual Basic Needs Caf\u00e9 is part of the work of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Student Basic Needs (<abbr>UHSBN<\/abbr>) Committee, formed in 2019 to address the prevalence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/19320248.2018.1484316\">food<\/a> insecurity and other forms of student basic needs across the 10 campuses. The committee aims to provide comprehensive support and resources to students experiencing basic needs insecurity, and includes students, staff and faculty across <abbr>UH<\/abbr>. Initiated by the committee in 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/master-plan-3-year-strategy\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> System Student Basic Needs Master Plan<\/a> sets forth priorities and action items identified by all 10 campuses across the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Virtual Basic Needs Caf\u00e9 is supported through the Stupski Foundation through a five-year, $500,000 grant is one of four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/15\/stupski-foundation-support-students-basic-needs\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> initiatives<\/a> to assist low-income and first-generation students in obtaining accessible and affordable college experiences.<\/p>\n<h2>On-campus\/off-campus resources<\/h2>\n<p>A list of available resources on each <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/resources\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> campus<\/a>, including food pantries, housing support, emergency funds and counseling services can be accessed by students by visiting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Student Basic Needs website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>UHSBN<\/abbr> also collaborates with findhelp.org to provide students with access to community, state and federal basic needs resources. The website launched in March 2021 and has been made available to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students through the <abbr>UHSBN<\/abbr> site.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system recognizes that <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0890117120946210?journalCode=ahpa\">basic needs insecurity can significantly impact a student&#8217;s academic success and overall well-being<\/a>.
