Approximately 3,000 students from 45 schools from as far as <span aria-label=\"Laie\">L&#257;&#699;ie<\/span> and N\u0101n\u0101kuli attended the performances.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope that the Symphony of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Forests sparks their imagination and inspires them to collaborate and create things that they feel passionate about,&rdquo; said <strong>Laura Margulies<\/strong>, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/cinema\/\">School of Cinematic Arts<\/a> assistant professor and visual media coordinator. &ldquo;With forests and native Hawaiian trees as the topic of this show, I want young people to become more emotionally connected to them as I believe trees are vital for our survival and our happiness.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The program featured new music performed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myhso.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Symphony Orchestra<\/a> accompanied by new animations based on <span aria-label=\"kaao\">ka&#699;ao<\/span> (legends) that were created for this project that tell stories about how we can connect and care for our forests of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_176505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176505\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-symphony-hawaii-forests-wai-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of water evaporating in the sunlight\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-176505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-symphony-hawaii-forests-wai-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-symphony-hawaii-forests-wai-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-symphony-hawaii-forests-wai.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from &ldquo;Ka Wai Ke Kumu Ola&rdquo;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Teachers were provided with online educational resources by the M\u0101lama Learning Center about the forests of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to prepare their students for the topics that would be covered during the symphony. Meanwhile, classes were encouraged to learn a hula about the water cycle so that they could then perform together en mass at the concert.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project is a symphony in so many ways, not just musically, but in the way so many members of our community from all walks of life come together to make this work a possibility.
