Sixteen graduate programs at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> have been nationally recognized for academic and research excellence, according to the 2023–24 U.S. News and World Report<\/em>\u2019s Best Graduate Schools rankings<\/a>, released on April 25.<\/p>\n

Seven programs were ranked in the nation\u2019s top 100, and five placed in the top 75. The School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (SOEST<\/abbr>) ranked No<\/abbr>. 42 for its earth sciences doctoral programs, the Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/a> placed No<\/abbr>. 49 for its doctor of nursing practice (DNP<\/abbr>) program and No<\/abbr>. 60 for best master\u2019s nursing programs, the College of Education<\/a> ranked No<\/abbr>. 64 and the College of Social Sciences<\/a> placed No<\/abbr>. 72 in public affairs for its Public Administration Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“At a time when many prospective graduate students are deciding which institution they will attend in the fall, these rankings demonstrate that UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is home to world-class academic programs across a vast range of disciplines,” UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost Michael Bruno<\/strong> said. “The consistent national recognition of M\u0101noa’s excellence over the years is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty and staff.”<\/p>\n

The rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program excellence, and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students.<\/p>\n

School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/h2>\n

The Department of Earth Sciences<\/a> in SOEST<\/abbr> placed No<\/abbr>. 42 out of 166 earth sciences doctoral programs considered. Students in the PhD<\/abbr> program gain advanced knowledge, develop professional skills and learn cutting-edge methodologies through specialized coursework and by conducting research.<\/p>\n

Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/h2>\n

UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing\u2019s DNP<\/abbr> program placed No<\/abbr>. 49 among 169 schools considered in the newest U.S. News<\/em> ranking. UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa nursing is the only Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> DNP<\/abbr> program ranked by U.S. News<\/em> since 2018. UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa nursing also placed No<\/abbr>. 60 out of 184 schools for best master\u2019s nursing programs.<\/p>\n

College of Education<\/h2>\n

The College of Education (COE<\/abbr>) ranked No<\/abbr>. 64 of 272 schools considered, the 18th straight year the college has been listed as one of the nation\u2019s top 100 education programs. Nationally accredited since 2000, COE<\/abbr> continues to be recognized for its award-winning programs and people.<\/p>\n

College of Social Sciences<\/h2>\n

The Public Administration Program in the College of Social Sciences ranked No<\/abbr>. 72, up 16 spots from the previous year, out of 269 graduate programs considered. The ranking puts the program in the top third of all master\u2019s of public administration programs in the country. The master\u2019s of public administration program is the only one accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration in the state, and offers an 18-month accelerated, two-year full-time and three-year part-time plan.<\/p>\n

Shidler College of Business<\/h2>\n

The Shidler College of Business<\/a> rose 12 spots from last year to No<\/abbr>. 77 out of 149 schools considered in the full-time master of business administration (MBA<\/abbr>) category. Shidler\u2019s MBA<\/abbr> programs are the only Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International accredited MBA<\/abbr> programs in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and among the few MBA<\/abbr> programs in the U.S. with a true Asia-Pacific focus.<\/p>\n

College of Engineering<\/h2>\n

Four College of Engineering<\/a> graduate programs were ranked among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News<\/em>. Civil engineering<\/a> ranked No<\/abbr>. 90; electrical engineering<\/a> placed No<\/abbr>. 112; and mechanical engineering<\/a> ranked No<\/abbr>. 124. The College of Engineering ranked in No<\/abbr>. 168 among the top engineering schools in the U.S. that grant doctoral degrees.<\/p>\n

Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health<\/h2>\n

The Office of Public Health Studies<\/a> (OPHS<\/abbr>) ranked No<\/abbr>. 105 out of 206 public health schools and programs in the U.S. accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. OPHS<\/abbr> offers a bachelor in arts in public health<\/a>; a master in public health<\/a>, with specializations in epidemiology<\/a>, health policy and management<\/a>, Native Hawaiian and Indigenous health<\/a> and social and behavioral health sciences<\/a>, and a master of science specializing in epidemiology<\/a>, as well as PhD<\/abbr> program in public health<\/a>, specializing in community-based and translational research and a PhD<\/abbr> in epidemiology<\/a>. OPHS<\/abbr> is also home to a recently launched online master of public health<\/a> program to meet workforce demands.<\/p>\n

College of Natural Sciences<\/h2>\n

Graduate programs in the College of Natural Sciences<\/a> were ranked by U.S. News<\/em>, including physics<\/a> at No<\/abbr>. 105, mathematics<\/a> at No<\/abbr>. 125, computer science<\/a> at No<\/abbr>. 139 and chemistry<\/a> at No<\/abbr>. 161.<\/p>\n

Law and medical school rankings were expected to be released, however, according to U.S. News and World Report<\/em>, due to an unprecedented number of inquiries from schools during the initial embargo period and verification of publicly available data, the updated 2023–24 Best Medical Schools and 2023–24 Best Law Schools rankings embargo and publication will be released at a later date.<\/p>\n
