\"two<\/div><\/figure>[vc_video link=”https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/2KfFKSPy7q0?feature=share” el_aspect=”916″ align=”right” el_id=”wrap-video-right”][vc_column_text]In celebration of Earth Day, the University of Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Office of Sustainability<\/a> conducted a waste audit of six buildings on the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus on April 21. Dozens of students, faculty and staff participated in the event of sorting, sifting and counting trash in garbage and recycling bins.<\/p>\n

Volunteers sifted through the garbage and placed the items in categorized buckets. Teams would later weigh and measure the trash in each category.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what we’re trying to do is design interventions to cut down waste and we need data to do it. So that data all starts here,\u201d said Navin Tagore Erwin<\/strong>, UH<\/abbr> zero-waste coordinator.<\/p>\n

Students said the audit helped them realize the importance of looking at ways to reduce waste.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere we live it’s really important to focus on how we approach the waste that we throw away,\u201d said UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa junior Kendrix Jademeadow<\/strong>. \u201cSustainability in general is important to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s kind of crazy to see how much trash are things like wipes and single-use items,\u201d UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa junior Sasha Numazu-Fisher<\/strong> said. \u201cA lot of what we are finding are things that people don\u2019t even use; things like wrappers and such.\u201d<\/p>\n

Related: UH<\/abbr> campuses host events to celebrate Earth Day 2023<\/a>, April 2023<\/span>Organizers hope the audit and ones that will be done at all of the buildings this year will help give a comprehensive look at the waste created on the campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cPretty much the start of a zero-waste institution starts with figuring out what we’re doing to begin with,\u201d Tagore Erwin said. \u201cSo this is really step one and we’ve got a long way to go. But we\u2019ve also got a whole lot of potential.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"womanThe organizers will provide campus leaders with the data to help determine how to improve trash organization, recycling and waste reduction.<\/p>\n
