Journalism<\/a> students in the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa School of Communication and Information<\/a> are being recognized for excellence in the field with scholarships and a paid national internship.<\/p>\n

Keya Rivera<\/strong> was selected as a Dow Jones News Fund summer intern, and will spend her paid internship at Pacific Business News (PBN<\/abbr>)<\/em>. As part of the news fund\u2019s business reporting program, the interns will spend a week in New York City learning the fundamentals of business reporting and sharpening reporting skills before serving their internships. Rivera is part of the cohort working at American City Business Journal publications, which includes PBN<\/em>.<\/p>\n

“There is much to celebrate in the journalism program,” said Brett Oppegaard<\/strong>, associate professor. “These are nationally significant and paid internships that lead directly to jobs in the field.”<\/p>\n

Victoria Budiono<\/strong> is the recipient of the $1,500 Carol Burnett Award for Responsible Journalism, which recognizes high ethical standards in the field of journalism.<\/p>\n

“Victoria is a leader and exemplar in the program, and has published significant journalistic work in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>-based and international publications,” said Professor Ann Auman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The fund was endowed in 1981 following Burnett\u2019s successful libel suit against the National Enquirer. It supports “teaching and research designed to further high stands of ethics and professionalism in journalism, and for awards to outstanding students who have demonstrated a strong sense of journalistic responsibility and integrity.”<\/p>\n

The UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa journalism program has awarded about $20,000 in scholarships for the 2023–24 academic year to students Eujin Chung<\/strong>, Chandler Cowell<\/strong>, Tori DeJournett<\/strong>, Laurel Galvin<\/strong>, Flynn Hamlin<\/strong>, Lili Hurd<\/strong>, Hiʻilawe<\/span> Neves<\/strong>, Jordan Kalawaiʻa<\/span> Nunies<\/strong> and Sarah Tomita<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
