Saffery, who currently teaches at <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> High School, graduated from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> in 2018 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/education\/\">bachelor of education<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/education\/secondary-education\/\">secondary education<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/humanities\/english\/\">bachelor of arts in English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ncte.org\/press-updates\/ncte-announces-2021-eceoc-leadership-award-honorees\/\">award<\/a> supports early career teachers of color as they build accomplished teaching careers in literacy education. Honorees benefit from professional learning opportunities, mentorship and access to a network of peers from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was excited to use the resources and mentorship that was afforded to us through this award to benefit the students at <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> High School,&rdquo; said Saffery.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to provide for her students in such a way is meaningful for Saffery, who is from M\u0101kaha. She views teaching as a career that allows her to give back to the community that raised her.<\/p>\n<p>When Saffery applied for the award, she said she wasn\u2019t sure that she would get it, but thought it was worth a try. She received great encouragement from her <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> professors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our job as faculty is to recognize the gifts our students have and help them to bring that gift forward into their career and life, even beyond our time with them at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Cathy Ikeda<\/strong>, assistant professor of middle level and secondary English. &ldquo;Lydia is a gifted writing teacher.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Empowering students<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s program instilled in Saffery the instructional values of student empowerment through &ldquo;choice and voice in the classroom,&rdquo; which she now carries into her teaching practice.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My main goal as a teacher is to empower students through the instruction in my classroom and my interactions with my professional community,&rdquo; Saffery said. &ldquo;As a student at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, I was trained to curate materials and create classroom experiences that put students\u2019 experiences\u2014as children of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2014at the center of instruction.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Saffery has presented at the 2020 <abbr>NCTE<\/abbr> about teaching writing during the time of <abbr>COVID<\/abbr>, and is also a teacher consultant for the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/programs\/hwp\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Writing Project<\/a> (which introduces educators to practices that will motivate students and teachers).
