The students toured the Waim\u0101nalo Research Station and Urban Garden Center and viewed the aquaponics and aquaculture field trial areas with the Sustainable and Organic Agriculture program. They also learned about minor crop registration issues on coffee with the Cooperative Extension\u2019s <abbr title=\"Interregional Research Project Number 4\">IR-4<\/abbr> Minor Crop Registration Program and set up a static hydroponic system developed using <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>-generated science.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-ctahr-unl-visit-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people at farm learning about plants\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-175559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-ctahr-unl-visit-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-ctahr-unl-visit-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-ctahr-unl-visit-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For a cultural learning experience, the Nebraskan club had the opportunity to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/gofarmhawaii.org\/\">GoFarm <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> beginner farmer program to learn about food sustainability; they saw native Hawaiian plants and explored cultural preservation with the Master Garden Program, and learned about culturally important crops such as m\u0101maki (typically brewed for tea) and other local flowers and resources that could be used to make plant-based dyes and more with <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> 4-H.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a faculty member with an extension appointment, I knew we would be able to see many horticultural opportunities by reaching out to <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Extension,&rdquo; said Terri James, associate extension educator at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s team made up of <strong>Christine Hanakawa<\/strong>, <strong>Alberto Ricordi<\/strong>, <strong>Jensen Uyeda<\/strong>, <strong>Ted Radovich<\/strong>, <strong>Tina Lau<\/strong>, <strong>Eric Collier<\/strong>, <strong>Ken Leonhardt<\/strong>, <strong>James Kam<\/strong>, <strong>Richard Fisher<\/strong> and <strong>Pono Chung<\/strong> lined up horticultural examples in both the urban and research settings.<\/p>\n<p>The students came away with a better understanding of the much different microclimate zones than their own zones, yet sharing similar issues such as a lack of rain on the leeward side of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s mountain range having a rain shadow effect. Nebraskans also have that effect on the western side of their state due to the Rocky Mountain range.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My main goal with these trips is to have students see that, although they learn horticulture in one location, by understanding the basics, they can apply their knowledge to any geographical location,&rdquo; James said. &ldquo;Thank you <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> for hosting us. We had a fantastic time. I look forward to our next visit.
