To discover which traits would be most beneficial, the students learned about the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa arboretum\u2019s native and non-native trees.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It feels good to be doing a project like this for <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span>,&rdquo; said seventh grader Alya Hasan. &ldquo;I\u2019m doing something great for my school and for my community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Tour guide <strong>Noweo Kai<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Campus Arboretum curator, offered valuable information on trees in a campus setting and posed considerations for the students, such as how the plants can affect <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> or celebrate <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s endemic plants.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/13\/tree-recognition-manoa-campus\/\">Arboretum accreditation, tree recognition for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus<\/a>, April 13, 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;The students know the impact they have on their community right now,&rdquo; said Kai. &ldquo;The Campus Arboretum serves as an example for them to learn from. Both the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span> Intermediate campuses have the same considerations for our island.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span> Intermediate project is led by teachers Sherry Cassetta and Laurel De Ponte and gives students a chance to learn about trees in a more impactful way. It is part of a larger <abbr title=\"Environmental Protection Agency\">EPA<\/abbr>-funded project measuring and identifying ways to mitigate the impact of urban heat islands (built environments that retain heat) undertaken by the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treesforhonolulu.org\/\">Trees for Honolulu\u2019s Future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Through this project, students gain knowledge about <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> plants and help their community while practicing Hawaiian values of kuleana (responsibility), m\u0101lama (care), l\u014dkahi (cooperation), which are relevant in any culture and place,&rdquo; said Cassetta. &ldquo;In December 2022, the students prepared 80 milo seedlings\u2014some will be put in the ground, but others will be shared with the <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span> <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Planting the seed<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_175440\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-175440\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-aiea-intermediate-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"boy smelling flower\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-175440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-aiea-intermediate-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-aiea-intermediate-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-aiea-intermediate-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-175440\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students took turns smelling the cannonball flowers near Sinclair Circle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although the students delved into the impact they have on their school and community now, they also gained insights into careers in arboriculture and the value of higher education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roxanne Adams<\/strong>, director of Buildings and Grounds at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, shared her story of her desire to study plants, especially plants in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, and how plants can be incorporated into many career paths, from art to architecture and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was great for the students to tour the Campus Arboretum, not only because we have a huge collection of plants for them to learn from, but because they got to be on a college campus and know that they can receive a good education right here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Adams.<\/p>\n<p>Seventh grader Michaela Whaley shared her excitement in pursuing higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Plants and gardening could be part of one of my future careers and I really want to attend college to pursue that,&rdquo;
