The 50th Anniversary Out Loud in the Library! event will be held on Thursday, April 13, 5&#8211;6:30 p.m. in Hale <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span>, the Hawaiian studies building.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Snaring New Suns: Speculative Works from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Beyond&rdquo; is edited by Tom Gammarino, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa Assistant Professor <strong>Bryan Kamaoli Kuwada<\/strong>, D. <span aria-label=\"Kealii\">Keali&#699;i<\/span> MacKenzie and Lyz Soto. This issue from Bamboo Ridge challenges writers to create speculative narratives that &ldquo;imagine otherwise.&rdquo; The result is a collection of pieces from 48 established and emerging authors and artists who venture into a new realm of speculative work.<\/p>\n<p>Thoughtfully curated and arranged to amplify each piece within a larger reading experience, the anthology experiments with form and mixes genres of the supernatural, alternate reality, climate fiction and more, including art, graphic stories, nonfiction and a stage play.<\/p>\n<h2>About the writers<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Donald Carreira Ching<\/strong>, Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> English instructor<br \/>\nBorn and raised in <span aria-label=\"Kahaluu,\">Kahalu&#699;u,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, Ching\u2019s poetry and fiction have appeared in publications such as <em>Rio Grande Review<\/em>, <em>NonBinary Review<\/em> and <em>Every Day Fiction<\/em>. In 2015, his debut novel, <em>Between Sky and Sea: A Family&#8217;s Struggle<\/em>, was published by Bamboo Ridge Press. In 2018, he received the Elliot Cades Award for Literature\u2013Emerging Writer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timothy Dyke<\/strong><br \/>\nDyke is a writer and teacher who lives in Makiki with parrots. His published work includes the chapbook, <em>Awkward Hugger<\/em>, the prose poem collection, <em>Atoms of Muses<\/em>, and a book length poem called <em>MAGA<\/em>, all with Tinfish Press.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Misty-Lynn Sanico<\/strong><br \/>\nSanico is a Kanaka &#699;\u014ciwi (Native Hawaiian) writer living in Honolulu. Her work has appeared in <em>Bamboo Ridge<\/em>, <em>Abstract Magazine<\/em>, the <em>Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/em> and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Stanton<\/strong>, professor emeritus of art history and American studies at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<br \/>\nStanton has lived on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> since 1972. His books of poems include <em>Prevailing Winds<\/em>, <em>Moving Pictures<\/em>, <em>Things Seen<\/em>, <em>Imaginary Museum: Poems on Art<\/em>, <em>A Field Guide to the Wildlife of Suburban Oahu<\/em>, <em>Cardinal Points<\/em>, and <em>What the Kite Thinks: A Linked Poem<\/em> (co-authored with Makoto \u014coka, Wing Tek Lum and Jean Toyama).
