The big flower with the large round part in the middle is supposed to represent the Sun, and some of the other round elements among the flowers represent planets. The stars above are based on the Pleiades, which is the motif in the sculpture on the machine shop wall.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Garma said he had to take a liberty on the placement of the stars to make the art balance out.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The idea for a mural started with a general interest in making <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> more &lsquo;beautiful&rsquo; by incorporating student art,&rdquo; said <strong>Larry Denneau<\/strong>, a software engineer at <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> and member of the beautification committee. &ldquo;We gave the artist nearly total freedom in selecting what would go into the mural and it showcases significant talent among Âé¶¹´«Ã½art students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Garma proposed some ideas similar to other mural work he has done, and the proposal was approved by <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> faculty. <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> used donated funds administered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> and private donations for the materials plus some compensation for the artist. Most of the funding went toward paint and scaffolding rental.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174908\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-ifa-mural-reception-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"people attending reception\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-174908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-ifa-mural-reception-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-ifa-mural-reception-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-ifa-mural-reception.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">People at <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> reception.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Mural reception<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>IfA<\/abbr> held a reception for Garma on March 24, which had more than 50 people attending&#8212;from the art department, <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> staff and students, the beautification committee and attendees who were friends and family of Garma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Unruh<\/strong>, <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>\u2019s physical plant manager and member of the beautification committee, arranged for a reception and explained how the collaboration between the art department and <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> began.<\/p>\n<p>The beautification committee members include: Denneau, <strong>Curt Dodds<\/strong>, <strong>Karen Meech<\/strong>, <strong>Raja Narayanan<\/strong>, Unruh, <strong>Roy Gal<\/strong>, <strong>Ben Shappee<\/strong>, <strong>Dan Huber<\/strong>, <strong>Eugene Magnier<\/strong>, <strong>Melissa Matsuura<\/strong>, <strong>Morgan Bonnet<\/strong>, <strong>Jennifer van Saders<\/strong>, <strong>Carolyn Kaichi<\/strong> and <strong>Alan Tokunaga<\/strong>.
