Kahuaola, as its name references, is a student resource center that aims to build a foundation to support the basic needs of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> students. Kahua is the foundation upon which ola&#8212;life, health and well-being&#8212;blossoms.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College and other higher education institutions are seeing more students struggling to meet basic needs like food and housing, which makes it difficult for them to succeed in college,&rdquo; said <strong>Craig Mitchell<\/strong>, the coordinator of the Kahuaola Basic Needs Center. &ldquo;If we can connect students with our on-campus food and resource pantry, as well as to other support programs available in the community, we can increase the chances students will persist and graduate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_174091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-174091\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaiicc-kahuaola-basic-needs-blessing-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing and smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-174091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaiicc-kahuaola-basic-needs-blessing-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaiicc-kahuaola-basic-needs-blessing-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/hawaiicc-kahuaola-basic-needs-blessing.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-174091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blessing ceremony for Kahuaola Basic Needs Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor <strong>Rachel Solemsaas<\/strong> said the establishment of Kahuaola is a recognition of how important it is for the college to work in partnership with community organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In addition to offering services like a food pantry, Kahuaola is also a resource center and a connection to the community,&rdquo; Solemsaas said. &ldquo;Because at the end of the day, as an educational institution, we know we can\u2019t do it alone. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College is proud to be part of the larger opportunity network that supports students so they can succeed in college, thrive in the workforce, and support themselves and their families.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/15\/stupski-foundation-support-students-basic-needs\/\">Related story: $1.8M to support low-income, first-generation students\u2019 basic needs<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The launch of Kahuaola has been supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/15\/stupski-foundation-support-students-basic-needs\/\">five-year Stupski Foundation grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We mahalo the Stupski Foundation for investing in our students and community,&rdquo; said Solemsaas.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2021\/06\/UH-System-2021-HOPE-Report.pdf\">recent study<\/a>, 50&#37; of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students surveyed experienced some type of basic needs insecurity. Basic needs include, but are not limited to, food and housing, clothing, childcare, mental health and transportation. Of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students who were surveyed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>37&#37; experienced housing insecurity in the previous year<\/li>\n<li>31&#37; experienced food insecurity in the prior 30 days<\/li>\n<li>10&#37; experienced homelessness in the previous year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, 50&#37; of students experiencing basic needs insecurity did not apply for campus support because they were unaware of support services or did not know how.<\/p>\n<h2>Important resources<\/h2>\n<p>Kahuaola offers a food pantry for students; application support for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/counseling\/hinet\">Hawaii Nutrition, Employment and Training (<abbr>HINET<\/abbr>) program<\/a> for eligible students; and connection to other essential resources to help students meet their basic needs while pursuing a college education.<\/p>\n<p>The center will also focus on increasing scholarship and <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a> completion as well as linking students to financial literacy opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amanda Santiago<\/strong>, who is studying culinary arts at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, said she receives transportation reimbursement through the <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> program to help defray the costs of driving to campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m really thankful for this program, because it\u2019s helping me a lot,&rdquo; said Santiago. &ldquo;Since I\u2019m from P\u0101hoa, I drive every day, and gas is really expensive.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The opening of Kahuaola is part of a broader effort across the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> System to address gaps in students\u2019 ability to meet basic needs. Âé¶¹´«Ã½has adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/master-plan-3-year-strategy\/\">Basic Needs Master Plan<\/a> and has launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/\">basic needs website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also an expansion of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s efforts to address students\u2019 struggles with basic needs.
