A new stipend program will assist eligible students enrolled in Early Childhood Education (ECE<\/abbr>) programs across three University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> four-year campuses (UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>, UH<\/abbr> Hilo) and four UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges (Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> CC<\/abbr>, Honolulu CC<\/abbr>, Kauaʻi<\/span> CC<\/abbr>, UH<\/abbr> Maui College). The Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Early Childhood Educator Tuition Stipend Program<\/a> was created by the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Education<\/a> (COE<\/abbr>) and State of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Executive Office on Early Learning<\/a> (EOEL<\/abbr>), in partnership with the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Graduate ECE<\/abbr> Programs in the COE<\/abbr> Department of Curriculum Studies are coordinating the systemwide stipend application process, including administering awards and collecting data on the workforce related to the stipends, in collaboration with ECE<\/abbr> preparation program faculty on seven UH<\/abbr> campuses. Assistant Specialist and Graduate ECE<\/abbr> Programs Director Robyn Chun<\/strong>; Project Manager LaurieAnn Takeno<\/strong>; and Graduate ECE<\/abbr> Programs Coordinator Jaime Lum<\/strong> will oversee the stipend program application process.<\/p>\n

“This is one of many early childhood education workforce development partnerships that the college is engaged in with the EOEL<\/abbr>,” Chun said. “This is part of a larger initiative to develop comprehensive systems of workforce financial support for early childhood educators who are frequently amongst the lower paid wage earners and, as a result, find it difficult to pursue an education.”<\/p>\n

Eligible students must be enrolled in ECE<\/abbr> generalist certificates, degrees or license programs on one of seven UH<\/abbr> system campuses; maintain a C or better in coursework; and work in a position in the early learning system as described in HRS \u00a7302L-2<\/a> for two years after matriculation.<\/p>\n
