Installation of the first <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> systems is planned for 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By supporting the <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> International Project Office, these funds will help drive <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> cables toward becoming world standard, leading to a global network integrating environmental sensors, such as temperature, pressure and seismic acceleration, into submarine telecommunications cables,&rdquo; said <strong>Bruce Howe<\/strong>, lead investigator of the new grant and professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/ore\/\">Ocean and Resources Engineering<\/a> in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>. &ldquo;Researchers and communities hope to cost-effectively transform the current telecom network into a combined telecom and planetary-scale ocean, climate and geophysical sensor array capable of informing early warning systems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173778\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-soest-smart-cables-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"photo of globe\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-173778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-soest-smart-cables-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-soest-smart-cables-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-soest-smart-cables.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Submarine telecommunications cables span the globe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The support from <abbr>SMTP<\/abbr> includes a subaward to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.subseadatasystems.com\/\">Subsea Data Systems<\/a>, a new startup dedicated to developing <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> systems, to continue their rapid progress toward a commercialized <abbr>SMART<\/abbr> repeater sensor solution. Having such a solution readily available will allow suppliers and system integrators to provide the capability in upcoming new systems.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&#8217;re truly excited to see this effort gaining momentum and are confident it offers the potential to significantly improve and expand our understanding of the oceans,&rdquo; said Mark Schrope, director of <abbr>SMTP<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<h2>Reducing risk<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>SMART<\/abbr> Subsea Cables will allow climate change monitoring including ocean circulation and sea level; tsunami and earthquake early warning for disaster risk reduction; seismic monitoring for earth structure and related hazards; quantifying risk to inform sustainable development of coastal and offshore infrastructure, warning of external hazards to cables, and improve routing of cable systems.
