Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) kicks off an initiative that aims to increase opportunities for youth to learn about a potential career in medicine while also helping to address the doctor shortage in the state. <\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Huakai\">Huaka&#699;i<\/span> (Voyage) Symposium was held on March 3, at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> with more than 100 academic advisors and career counselors from middle and high schools across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in attendance. The event included keynote addresses by Gov. Josh Green, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Regent <strong>Diane Paloma<\/strong> and <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Interim Dean <strong>Lee Buenconsejo-Lum<\/strong>. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education Superintendent <strong>Keith Hayashi<\/strong> led a plenary session that included representatives from several health academies and current medical students. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173682\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173682\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-jabsom-huakai-gov-lee-tom-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"lee, green and tom smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-173682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-jabsom-huakai-gov-lee-tom-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-jabsom-huakai-gov-lee-tom-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/manoa-jabsom-huakai-gov-lee-tom.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lee Buenconsejo-Lum, Gov. Josh Green and Jaimie Tom<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Counselors and administrators heard about the many programs offered through <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> for students interested in careers in science and medicine, including the Pre-Health Advising Center, rural health, Native Hawaiian health and anatomy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s just planting these seeds of ideas that it is a possibility,&rdquo; said <strong>Jaimie Tom<\/strong>, associate director of admissions at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> who organized the symposium. &ldquo;What goes from being a dream, then becomes a goal, then you have a plan and you have people around you to really guide you. It&#8217;s about exploration. These are all departments housed in <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> that are doing wonderful things to outreach to the community, so it\u2019s really about showcasing all of our talents here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Huakai\">Huaka&#699;i<\/span> is open to anyone who works with students or has a desire to support these efforts such as counselors, advisors, teachers as well as those in the business sector. The purpose is to provide a platform to allow engagement amongst community leaders and educators, as well as to highlight programs offered through <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>First-year medical student <strong>Jonathan Carino <\/strong>said he wished <span aria-label=\"Huakai\">Huaka&#699;i<\/span> existed when he was a student at Pearl City High School.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When I was growing up, the message was out there, but I didn\u2019t hear it. I think that\u2019s the case for many people on this island who don\u2019t have the resources or support.
