Larry Winnik and Jean Carr receive special recognition from Honolulu City Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Jean Carr<\/strong> and Larry Winnik<\/strong>, two of the many dedicated long-term volunteers with UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant’s Hanauma Bay Education Program<\/a>, were recognized this week by the Honolulu City Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On June 5, council member Stanley Chang presented an honorary certificate to Carr and Winnik on the occasion of their 20-year anniversaries.<\/p>\n

Carr was born in Oregon, relocated to Honolulu in 1962, and has volunteered for 23 years with HBEP<\/abbr>. She enjoys hiking, snorkeling, Hawaiian arts and crafts, and Native Hawaiian plants. She likes to help and meet people from all over the world who come to Hanauma Bay. She welcomes visitor questions and especially enjoys those from the children; their sense of wonder and enthusiasm provides many rewards for her volunteer work.<\/p>\n

Originally from California, Winnik served 25 years in the U.S.<\/abbr> Air Force, retiring as a colonel in 1991. He has volunteered for more than 20 years with the Hanauma Bay Education Program, and is an avid snorkeler, underwater photographer, fisherman, avid reader and motorcycle rider. When asked what he enjoys most about volunteering, he says that he enjoys interacting with visitors at the beach desk and the theater and sharing his love of the bay. He especially appreciates the smiles on many Make A Wish children who visit.<\/p>\n

Hanauma Bay Education Program volunteer opportunities<\/h2>\n

New volunteers are always needed and no experience is necessary. The team of more than 100 dedicated individuals promotes stewardship of Hanauma Bay and minimizes the impacts to the reef by educating visitors about proper reef etiquette and the value of marine resources.<\/p>\n
