The award will help faculty expand upon this work for the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>The course, <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/kulana-noii\/\">K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i:<\/span><\/a> Introduction to Place-based Research Methodologies in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span> was piloted in 2021 as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mbiograd.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Marine Biology Graduate Program<\/a> (<abbr>MBGP<\/abbr>) at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. It begins with a two-week intensive training program and continues into the fall semester, aimed to provide students with a grounding in what constitutes a research paradigm and the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct place-based research in Indigenous spaces with a focus on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_173297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173297\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-himb-kulana-noii.jpg\" alt=\"students outside learning\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-173297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-himb-kulana-noii.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-himb-kulana-noii-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-himb-kulana-noii-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-173297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stream clearing at Papahana.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;When students enter <abbr>MBGP<\/abbr>, they typically lack formal training in multiple knowledge systems and appreciation of the cultural context in which they undertake their scientific research,&rdquo; said <strong>Megan Donahue<\/strong>, acting director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> (<abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>) and co-director of <abbr>MBGP<\/abbr>. &ldquo;This course introduces students to the historical, social, and cultural context of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and exposes students to place-based methodologies and community-based research.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Through partnership with the <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> National Estuarine Research Reserve (<abbr>HeNERR<\/abbr>), the first week of the course focuses on the <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> (land division), while the second week connects students with other communities undertaking biocultural restoration and research around <span aria-label=\"Oahu.\">O&#699;ahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By valuing the communities and knowledge systems of places where our students work, the course promotes an alignment of the graduate program culture to the communities,&rdquo; said <strong>Rosie Alegado<\/strong>, lead instructor and co-principal investigator. &ldquo;This approach also strives to create a more welcoming environment for local and Indigenous students, thereby supporting a long-range plan to increase recruitment and retention of students with diverse backgrounds.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Building community relationships<\/h2>\n<p>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span> outlines a set of ideas, values and behaviors that, when applied alongside hard work, can build more just and generative relationships between researchers and community. This framework centers the essential interdependence of people and ecosystems as foundational to place-based learning. The <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/ulana-ike\/\">Ulana <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Center of Excellence<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant) has worked for the last six years to provide professional development and training for students and faculty within the Âé¶¹´«Ã½System focused on the K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span> framework.<\/p>\n<p>One student who completed the course said, &ldquo;I feel a strong connection to my cohort as well as the program and this place. I would have never felt that without this course.
