Individual mental health can be challenging during holidays such as Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>The February 12 event, hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>) Home Garden Network (<abbr>HGN<\/abbr>), attracted 150 participants who created one ikebana arrangement to take home, and another to donate to Mental Health Kokua, an organization that serves adults who are striving for mental wellness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-big-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Three keiki with adult arranging flowers on a table\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-173063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-big-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-big-1-130x87.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-big-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To me, an ikebana flower arrangement can help people connect, learn from each other, and inspire people to grow plants at home,&rdquo; said <strong>Sothy Eng<\/strong>, assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/fcs2\/Undergraduate\/HDFS\">Human Development and Family Studies<\/a> (<abbr>HDFS<\/abbr>) and <abbr>HGN<\/abbr> founder.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Acts of kindness like this remind us that we have the ability to make a positive influence on someone&#8217;s life and the importance of being kind,&rdquo; added Norman Tansey, Family Education Centers of Hawaii, Inc. Some flowers were sourced from local flower shops, and participants also donated greenery and mason jars for the arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m happy that the event was a huge success (thanks to everyone\u2019s contributions) and I got to be a part of putting it together,&rdquo; said <strong>Kylie Maemori-Yoshida<\/strong>, a <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> student and <abbr>HGN<\/abbr> intern. &ldquo;It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and creating their flower arrangements for their loved ones and Mental Health Kokua.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The event was created in partnership between <abbr>HGN<\/abbr> and <abbr>FETCH<\/abbr>, a community organization that provides parenting and community garden training programs on <span aria-label=\"Oahu.\">O&#699;ahu.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Student-led event<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-6-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Person flashing shaka at a table full of flowers. Other people are selecting flowers for their arrangements\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-173052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-6-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-ctahr-valentines-6.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Four <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> undergraduate students, who are interns at <abbr>HGN<\/abbr> and <abbr>FETCH<\/abbr>, provided significant contributions in the planning and execution of the event, with the help of three current <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> student volunteers and two <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> alumni volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Seeing friends, families and loved ones coming together, while spreading kindness and love with their own creativity in the flower arrangements was very heartwarming to witness. The memories being created and shared will last,&rdquo; said <strong>Rosalynn Rico<\/strong>, a <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> student and <abbr>HGN<\/abbr> intern.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Being a volunteer for the flower arrangement event was a wonderful experience,&rdquo; said <strong>Laura Bartholomew<\/strong>, a <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> student and <abbr>FETCH<\/abbr> intern. &rdquo;It was great to see everyone\u2019s creativity and individuality blossom. I was humbled by their willingness to donate their time to make arrangements that would go on to be donated to Mental Health Kokua for Valentine\u2019s Day. The whole event perfectly encapsulated how beautiful community service can be.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Orville Baldos<\/strong>, an associate researcher in <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ctahr\/tpss\/\">Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences<\/a>, also shared with participants the role of florals in food sustainability in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diana Morales<\/strong>, a <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> student and <abbr>FETCH<\/abbr> intern, expressed her gratitude saying, &ldquo;I was amazed by the turnout, there were so many families and students making such beautiful arrangements.
