The educational outreach center located on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> campus will debut its latest exhibit, &ldquo;He Honua Ola: A Vibrant Coral Reef,&rdquo; a 20-foot-wide touch-reactive screen that displays a virtual ecosystem based on coral reefs off the Kona coast. The event is sponsored by <abbr>KTA<\/abbr> Super Stores.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172984\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/hilo-imiloa-birthday-reef-activity-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Keiki coloring a paper on a table decorated with the image of an uhu\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/hilo-imiloa-birthday-reef-activity-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/hilo-imiloa-birthday-reef-activity-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/hilo-imiloa-birthday-reef-activity.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Signature family friendly hands-on activities and crafts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The precious coral reefs that support diverse ecosystems in our oceans highlight the importance of conservation efforts for these unique environments and for future generations to enjoy healthy oceans,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kaiu\">Ka&#699;iu<\/span> Kimura, executive director at &#699;Imiloa. &ldquo;We are grateful for the generous support of <abbr>KTA<\/abbr> Super Stores, and we invite the public to celebrate our birthday with us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit was completed with scientific support from field scientists at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/themegalab.org\/livestream\">The MEGA Lab<\/a>, which shared footage of its coral reef livestream off of Kona and also contributed expert insight on coral reef species and characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the dynamic exhibit allows participants to watch their scanned artwork of local reef fish come to life on screen. &#699;Imiloa will also feature coral reef clay art; reef activities and crafts; live planetarium programs with coral reef experts from The MEGA Lab; outreach activities hosted by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Wildlife Fund, Mokup\u0101papa Discovery Center and local food vendors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Every year, &#699;Imiloa showcases the important part we all play in the future of our islands through technology and science,&rdquo; said Toby B.
