(Ned) Shultz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Edward J. (Ned) Shultz<\/strong>, a professor emeritus of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/asianstudies\/\">Asian studies<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa, will receive one of the highest honors bestowed upon Korean studies scholars around the world, the Yongjae Award on March 10.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When I was informed that I had received this award, I must confess surprise, and then thinking this is a real honor but there are many other people deserving of this award,&rdquo; said Shultz. &ldquo;My specific area of interest is Kory&#335; history (918&#8211;1392), which is an overlooked period in Korea\u2019s history, so in that respect, I was pleased that the Kory&#335; kingdom was getting some focus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Shultz has spent nearly 50 years teaching <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> students about Korea\u2019s compelling history. He was assigned to serve in the city of Pusan in South Korea and worked at Kyongnam High School. Upon returning to the islands, Shultz earned an <abbr title=\"Master of Arts\">MA<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>Through the years, his teaching path at three <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses paralleled work to uplift civic and cultural programs that focus on Korea and Koreans in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Shultz is currently president of the Korean American Foundation, and served as director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/koreanstudies\/\">Center for Korean Studies<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa (1998&#8211;2004).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In many respects my involvement in Korea and its history is very much thanks to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s centrality in the study of Asia,&rdquo; Shultz said.<\/p>\n<p>He has authored numerous Korean studies articles, and in 2000, <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press<\/a> published Shultz\u2019 book, <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/generals-and-scholars-military-rule-in-medieval-korea\/\"><em>Generals and Scholars in Medieval Korea<\/em><\/a>, which was translated and published in Korea in 2014.<\/p>\n<h2>Future works<\/h2>\n<p>Shultz is currently working on a number of projects related to his area of expertise. Yonsei University just published his translation of Kory&#335;sa ch&#335;ryo (Essentials of Kory\u014f History). He is also a member of an editorial team working on the translation of works on Kory&#335; dynastic history which is set to be published by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edward J.
