The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa is expanding on statewide efforts to promote One Health by launching the One Health Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate Program<\/a>. One Health is a proactive approach that considers the health of people as connected to the health of surrounding animals, plants and diversity. The first students are expected to enroll in the program in summer 2023.<\/p>\n

Recently approved by UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner<\/strong> and UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost Michael Bruno<\/strong>, the certificate program is based in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program<\/a>, and prepares students with the skills and knowledge to work collaboratively across disciplines to solve real-world problems using the One Health approach. <\/p>\n

“This, combined with the governor\u2019s proclamation<\/a> (PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) of January 2023 as Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> One Health Month, makes this a watershed moment for this initiative!” said Sandra Chang<\/strong>, One Health Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate program director and professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n

New program crosses multiple units, areas<\/h2>\n

The new program is a partnership that includes faculty from JABSOM<\/abbr>, the Office of Public Health Studies<\/a> in the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health<\/a>, the Pacific Biosciences Research Center<\/a> in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> and the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>. The certificate program received initial support from the Provost\u2019s Strategic Investment Initiative program in 2019.<\/p>\n

The curriculum consists of 15 credits in One-Health related coursework, including a research project mentored by UH<\/abbr> faculty or practicum capstone project. Both undergraduate and post baccalaureate students are eligible to enroll in the program.<\/p>\n

The <\/abbr>UH<\/abbr> One Health team was among more than 100 students, researchers, faculty and staff at the 2023 M\u0101noa Research Day<\/a> at the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Capitol on February 7.<\/p>\n
