More than 100 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, researchers and staff across 40 disciplines at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> participated in the event at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Capitol on February 7.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019ve had legislators come to visit the campus a number of times, but what we wanted to do was bring the research to the Capitol, to their home turf, so that they can see the broad scope of all that we do,&rdquo; said <strong>Christopher Sabine<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa vice provost for research and scholarship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people at research day\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-172477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is consistently ranked among the top <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/miro\/rankings\/\">2&#37; of universities worldwide<\/a> and is one of 146 institutions out of nearly 4,000, classified as &ldquo;R1: Doctoral Universities \u2013 Very high research activity&rdquo; in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s flagship campus also brought in &#36;366 million of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/21\/record-extramural-funding-fy-2022\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s record high &#36;505 million<\/a> in extramural funding (external investments from the federal government, industry and non-profit organizations).<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> lawmakers, staff, and visitors who just happened to be at the Capitol learned about the wide variety research being conducted at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa at informational tables, demonstrations and interactive activities on the Capitol\u2019s rotunda and fourth floor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s great to be able to connect with lawmakers and show them what we\u2019re doing at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and also hear from other students as well on all of the great work that is happening,&rdquo; said <strong>Olivia Cornejo<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduate student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/thompson\/\">Thompson School of Social Work &#38; Public Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people at research day\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-172476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/UH-Research-day1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sameer Kejriwal<\/strong>, a student at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> added, &ldquo;I\u2019ve never met our legislators before so this has been a great way to meet them and collaborate. We can show them the great work we\u2019re doing at the medical school and collaborate with them to have some great outcomes for the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span>&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>One demonstration included <abbr>UH<\/abbr> researchers, led by Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rayresearchgroup.com\/\">Tyler Ray<\/a>, creating 3D printed wearable sensors to help patients with cystic fibrosis.
