Hirono planted an &#699;ulu (breadfruit) tree during her January 12 visit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>U.S. Sen. Mazie K. Hirono visited the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> on January 12, and spoke with students, alumni, faculty, staff and administrators about initiatives in sustainable food and agriculture, food security, digital media, labor education and research, and more.<\/p>\n<p>As part of her visit, Hirono toured <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/places\/halekuahuokala\/\">Hale Kuahuokal\u0101 and the Student Organic Garden<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/uluulu.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span>: The Henry <span aria-label=\"Kuualoha\">Ku&#699;ualoha<\/span> Giugni Moving Image Archive of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a>, and the new <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/kaloinews\/?p=18161\">Academy for Creative Media (<abbr>ACM<\/abbr>) Student Production Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For the last decade, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> has steadily worked to expand the programs, resources, and support available to its students,&rdquo; Hirono said in a release. &ldquo;They have demonstrated their commitment to creating opportunities to enable all students&#8212;particularly underrepresented students&#8212;to receive a quality post-secondary education.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/11\/18\/sen-hirono-visits-uh-west-oahu-students\/\">U.S. Sen. Hirono visits <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, meets students<\/a>, November 18, 2022<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During Hirono\u2019s tour of the m\u0101la (garden), she met with <strong>Albie Miles<\/strong>, assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/applied-science\/sustainable-community-food-systems\/\">sustainable community food systems<\/a>, and discussed the program, which prepares students for jobs in the sustainable food and agriculture sector. Hirono also spoke to <strong>Manulani Aluli Meyer<\/strong>, Konohiki of K\u016blana o Kapolei (director of Indigenous education), and <strong>Indrajit Gunasekara<\/strong>, financial aid officer, about their NiU NOW!\/Uluniu Project movement, and planted an &#699;ulu (breadfruit) tree in the Uluniu Grove beside the m\u0101la.<\/p>\n<p>Her next meeting was with <strong>William Puette<\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/clear\">Center for Labor Education and Research<\/a> (CLEAR), which is designed to provide labor education, research and labor-related programs to workers, their organizations and the general public. CLEAR recently established a <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/certificates\/#labor-studies\">labor studies certificate program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hirono then visited <span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span>, the state\u2019s official archive for moving images, where she spoke with staff about the digital preservation work they do with audiovisual materials sharing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s culture, traditions and collective memory.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Hirono toured the new <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> Student Production Center with <strong>Chris Lee<\/strong>, founder and director of the <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> System; <strong>Sharla Hanaoka<\/strong>, director of <a href=\"https:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\/campus\/uh-west-oahu\/\"><abbr>ACM<\/abbr> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/creative-media\/\">creative media<\/a> students and alumni, who shared the work they are doing within the hub for creative media education throughout the <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> System.<\/p>\n<p>Hirono also stopped by and briefly spoke at two events on campus: a board meeting for Pacific Islanders in Communications, a national nonprofit media arts organization whose board of directors represent <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Guam, American Samoa and public television entities; and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Food Systems Summit, where participants brainstormed ideas for food system transformation and policy ideas for implementation during the 2023 state legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> offers diverse programs in promising fields that can contribute to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s economy, such as creative media and agriculture, and I enjoyed learning more about these initiatives,&rdquo; Hirono said. &ldquo;I will continue working to support <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s colleges and universities, as well as the students they serve.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For more, go to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/kaloinews\/?p=18421\">Ka Puna O <span aria-label=\"Kaloi\">Kalo&#699;i<\/span><\/a><\/em>.<br \/>\n&#8212;By <em>Zenaida Serrano Arvman<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Sen.
