The journal explores the relationship between society and the legal process through a variety of pieces, ranging from articles, theoretical developments, empirical studies, comments on methods of inquiry, and items of general interest to the research community.<\/p>\n<p>Heyer and Rubin will be joined in their co-editorship by Professor Shauhin Talesh of the University of California, Irvine. The trio will serve through January 2026.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m excited to get to work closely with and learn from my co-editors, two amazing law and society scholars,&rdquo; said Rubin, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">sociology<\/a>. &ldquo;We\u2019re honored and humbled to be taking on a position that so many amazing scholars have held before us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Heyer\u2019s and Rubin\u2019s appointments mark the second time in recent history that the <em>Law &#38; Society Review<\/em> editorship has been led by <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> faculty, and cements <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>&#8216;s reputation as one of the clear centers of law and society teaching and research. In 2011, Professors <strong>Jonathan Goldberg-Hiller<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">political science<\/a>) and <strong>David Johnson<\/strong> (sociology) began their co-editorship of the journal.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope that bringing the <em>Law &#38; Society Review<\/em> back to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> will generate new excitement and opportunities for sociolegal studies at our University,&rdquo; said Heyer, associate professor of political science.<\/p>\n<h2>More about Heyer and Rubin<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_171410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171410\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/manoa-sociology-ashley-rubin-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-171410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/manoa-sociology-ashley-rubin-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/manoa-sociology-ashley-rubin-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/manoa-sociology-ashley-rubin.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-171410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ashley Rubin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Heyer\u2019s research explores the ways that notions of disability equality and disability justice are mobilized and contested by local, national and global networks. Her book, Rights Enabled: the <em>Disability Revolution<\/em> (University of Michigan Press, 2015), follows the development of disability rights discourse in the U.S., Japan, Germany and the United Nations, and examines the implementation of disability education and employment human rights guarantees. She has also published on the politics of disability rights within contemporary discourses on prenatal testing, selective abortion, and death and dying policies.<\/p>\n<p>Rubin\u2019s research examines the dynamics of penal change throughout U.S. history. In particular, she uses organizational theory, law and society, punishment and society, and prison sociology to understand prisoner behavior, administrative behavior in penal organizations, and penal trends more broadly.
