The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> team called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiiavtech.com\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Artificial Intelligence\">AI<\/abbr> Racing Tech<\/a>, building off a recent strong performance, is one of nine teams from six countries representing 18 universities that will compete in the single elimination event on January 7, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/system-engineering-ai-racing-tech-car-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"race car on a track\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-171182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/system-engineering-ai-racing-tech-car-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/system-engineering-ai-racing-tech-car-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/system-engineering-ai-racing-tech-car.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event will begin with time trials and elimination rounds at 8 a.m. (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Standard Time). Then the semifinal and final rounds will be broadcast live from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Standard Time) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indyautonomouschallenge.com\/\">Indy Autonomous Challenge website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After the time trials, the remaining teams will race head-to-head, reaching speeds of more than 190 <abbr title=\"miles per hour\">mph<\/abbr>. <abbr title=\"Audiovisual\">AV<\/abbr>-21 race cars are programmed to alternate between playing the role of leader (defender) and passer\/follower (attacker). Passes will be attempted at increasing speeds until one or both cars are unable to successfully complete a pass.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/01\/07\/uh-ai-racing-tech-places-third\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>AI<\/abbr> Racing Tech places third in &lsquo;rollercoaster&rsquo; autonomous car challenge<\/a>, January 7, 2023<br \/>\n<\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>AI<\/abbr> Racing Tech enters the event as the top ranked United States team fresh off of its second place finish at the Indy Autonomous Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway on November 11, 2022. Among six teams in the competition, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>AI<\/abbr> Racing Tech lost to PoliMOVE out of Italy, which also won last year\u2019s Autonomous Challenge &#64; <abbr>CES<\/abbr>. Teams competed at speeds topping 140 <abbr>mph<\/abbr> despite unseasonably cold and wet weather conditions with track temperatures dropping to near freezing. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>AI<\/abbr> Racing Tech Team Principal <strong>Gary Passon<\/strong> is looking forward to better conditions in Las Vegas and an opportunity to improve.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The team has established itself as a serious competitor in this competition,&rdquo; Passon said. &ldquo;We had a few things break our way in the last race. But, races are races and so if you\u2019re not in it, you can\u2019t win it. That gave us a lot of confidence coming into the Las Vegas event. It started small from scaled vehicles, to go-kart-sized and now to full-sized racing cars. Since its inception, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>AI<\/abbr> Racing Tech has added students and faculty from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>, <abbr title=\"University of California\">UC<\/abbr> San Diego, Carnegie Mellon University and <abbr>UC<\/abbr> Berkeley. The collaboration is working to enrich the skills and resources of the schools, as well as to demonstrate the good will the various campuses have for each other.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This has been one of the most informative projects of my grad school career,&rdquo; said C.K.
