To celebrate, they put on a special luncheon at the Kailua facility, featuring some of the savory and sweet, five-star quality cuisine they have learned to create. The class was taught by Chef <strong>Lee Shinsato<\/strong> of <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It took them a while to figure out that they are actually University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> college students, and one of the most important things they ended up learning is to really believe in themselves,&rdquo; said Shinsato. &ldquo;I always say this: &lsquo;We mold and turn out better human beings that happen to have awesome cooking skills.&rsquo; I believe anybody can cook, anybody can learn something, but when you get the connection between the head and the heart, that\u2019s a really big deal.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Food on plates\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-170200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brysha Brown<\/strong>, <strong>Crystal Lawelawe<\/strong> and <strong>Kiana Kalima<\/strong> worked their way through beginner, intermediate and advanced level classes to make it to graduation day. They received a culinary program completion certificate from the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and earned 14 credits that will appear in their <abbr>UH<\/abbr> transcripts.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The culinary field is looking to hire, and this program is giving these women valuable and relevant job skills that can help them find instant employment when they leave,&rdquo; said <abbr>WCCC<\/abbr> Warden Sean Ornellas. &ldquo;We thank Chef Shinsato and the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College for introducing this program to <abbr>WCCC<\/abbr>, giving the women a positive career path to pursue and teaching them teamwork, professionalism and self-esteem.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The students not only learned the basics of culinary arts but also the skills that accompany a rigorous college course, such as: time management, study habits, completing assignments and the importance of showing up.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Desserts\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-170198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/kapiolani-culinary-wccc-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When we say that education is transformative, this program is exactly that.
