Students pose for a photo with military sponsors and mentors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The projects were created through semester-long <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa courses developed as part of the fall 2022 <abbr>DoD<\/abbr>\u2019s National Security Innovation Network\u2019s (<abbr>NSIN<\/abbr>) Hacking for Defense&#174; (<abbr>H4D<\/abbr>&#8482;) and Capstone program. Multidisciplinary student teams from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/natsci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Natural Sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a> learned and applied entrepreneurial skills while working with the <abbr>DoD<\/abbr> to identify and develop viable products and early-stage prototypes.<\/p>\n<p>Since launching the <abbr>H4D<\/abbr>&#8482; program at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> in spring 2021, 47 students have participated in <abbr>H4D<\/abbr>&#8482;, and six have obtained internships with <abbr>NSIN<\/abbr>, Booz Allen Hamilton and other companies. Students pose for a photo with military sponsors and mentors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Our partnership with <abbr>NSIN<\/abbr> helps to strengthen the university\u2019s relationship with the <abbr>DoD<\/abbr> and increases the number of opportunities to collaborate with them,&rdquo; said <strong>Vassilis L. Syrmos<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> vice president for research and innovation. &ldquo;<abbr>NSIN<\/abbr>\u2019s programs provide invaluable expertise and experiences for our students and faculty to gain real-world innovation and entrepreneurship training, while also providing career and business opportunities to the teams.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout <abbr>NSIN<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr>H4D<\/abbr>&#8482; and Capstone courses, participants learn and apply the Lean Startup methodology to develop business and mission model canvases; discover and validate customer needs; and apply agile engineering in building and testing iterative prototypes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The challenge of having to work in multidisciplinary teams while navigating the <abbr>DoD<\/abbr>\u2019s complex process requires discipline, and it also provides incredible workforce development and training opportunities not just for our Âé¶¹´«Ã½students and faculty, but the soldiers working on the projects as well,&rdquo; said <strong>Gloria Choo<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>NSIN<\/abbr> regional engagement principal. &ldquo;Participants have mentioned that the program has really helped with their communications and presentation skills as well as how they approach problem solving.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Fall 2022 <abbr>H4D<\/abbr>&#8482; Basic Rescue System to improve patient transportation safety.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Team Tracking Sidewinders<\/strong> presented a prototype of a web application that consolidates and tracks personnel training and certification data to ensure soldiers are consistently certified for deployment and career advancement, and the Army and Air Force are prepared for any potential mass medical casualty response needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Information and computer sciences capstone projects:<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170179\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170179\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-oic-hacking-for-defense-schofield-tour-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing around in a room\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-170179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-oic-hacking-for-defense-schofield-tour-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-oic-hacking-for-defense-schofield-tour-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-oic-hacking-for-defense-schofield-tour.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170179\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students tour military facilities at Schofield Barracks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Augmented Intelligence Natural Language Processing<\/strong> team further developed a prototype app to support aircraft maintenance by investigating how natural language processing can be used to improve data accuracy of squadron maintenance records, and enhance the user experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phase Maintenance Inspection Software<\/strong> team presented a proof-of-concept software that can better forecast, manage and assess mission-critical phase maintenance inspections of its fleet of rotary wing aircrafts by leveraging and synchronizing automation and data analytics. This will improve aviation sustainment capabilities, maintenance quality and predictability for soldiers and their families to prepare for training.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Digital Wargame Development<\/strong> team continued to develop and enhance an app that supports deployment logistics and planning, including the delivery and sustainment of supplies, munitions, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mechanical engineering capstone projects:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Airfield Debris from Launching Aircraft<\/strong> team developed a blueprint for a humvee trailer attachment and protective casing for a remote-controlled industrial debris blower to provide a safer and more efficient means of clearing potentially explosive munitions from airfields when flying in and out of enemy territory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fuel Sampling in Aircraft<\/strong> team is developing a prototype for a hand pump that is directly connected to a <abbr>UH<\/abbr>-60 (Black Hawk helicopter) that is more efficient and safer for crew members to sample fuel, preventing potential fuel contamination and exposure to toxic, corrosive fuel and reducing fuel preparation time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patient Warmer for Marines<\/strong> team developed technology to prevent morbidity and mortality rates of treating trauma patients with hypothermia, and overcome logistical challenges of requiring electricity for other treatment options.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>NSIN<\/abbr> programs are housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/research\/oic\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Office of Innovation and Commercialization<\/a> and are among several programs designed to elevate the research, innovation and entrepreneurship created throughout the 10-campus <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System.
