Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr> students host a <abbr>CPR<\/abbr> workshop for Farrington High School\u02bbs Health Academy students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite cardiovascular disease being one of the leading causes of death in the state, with Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islands (<abbr>NHPI<\/abbr>) suffering disproportionate rates of death from heart attack and stroke, less than half of <abbr>NHPI<\/abbr> adults know how to recognize the common symptoms of a heart attack or what to do when it happens.<\/p>\n<p>Medical students at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) are trying to change that through a program called Project <abbr>HEART<\/abbr>, which stands for &ldquo;Health, Exercise and Rescue Together.&rdquo; They are going out to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> high schools to teach high school students about heart health and provide mentorship to those interested in healthcare careers. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> learners hope that Project <abbr>HEART<\/abbr> will not only encourage students to consider careers in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> and medicine, but that the high schoolers will also share the &ldquo;heart-healthy&rdquo; message with their families.<\/p>\n<h2>Med students initiate community program<\/h2>\n<p>This community health program is a grassroots solution that was initiated by second-year medical students <strong>Anson Lee<\/strong> and <strong>Jonathan Hu<\/strong> in January 2022.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170043\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-jabsom-project-heart-baby-dummy-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-170043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-jabsom-project-heart-baby-dummy-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-jabsom-project-heart-baby-dummy-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-jabsom-project-heart-baby-dummy.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tamlyn Sasaki  demonstrating how to do <abbr>CPR<\/abbr> on babies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Essentially we want to give them (high school students) early access to heart disease education and lifestyle modifications and we\u2019re doing it through a problem-based learning curriculum, similar to what is taught at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said Hu, Project <abbr>HEART<\/abbr> co-director.<\/p>\n<p>Besides learning about cardiovascular health, the high schoolers get to practice hands-only <abbr title=\"Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation\">CPR<\/abbr> on a training mannequin.<\/p>\n<p>Lee, Project <abbr>HEART<\/abbr> co-director, points out that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is one of the few states in the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> where <abbr>CPR<\/abbr> is not a required graduation requirement for high schoolers. &ldquo;It\u2019s not necessarily about getting them certified, it\u2019s more so just making sure that every high schooler knows how to do hands-only <abbr>CPR<\/abbr> in those dire situations,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sid Vallebo, who wants to become an epidemiologist, found the class very informative. The junior at Wallace Rider Farrington High School especially liked the <abbr>Q&#038;A<\/abbr> portion at the end, where he and many of his classmates asked the medical students about their pathways to medical school and what types of undergraduate degrees they pursued.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re really happy to resume our relationship with <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> since the COVID pandemic.
