The program has provided assistance with undergraduate studies and mentorship, awarded scholarships, and trained future community leaders.<\/p>\n<h2>Supporting Filipino immigrant students<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_169962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169962\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-operation-manong-1970-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"OM students from 1976\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-169962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-operation-manong-1970-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-operation-manong-1970-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-operation-manong-1970.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Operation Manong students, 1976 summer program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fifty years ago, <abbr>OM<\/abbr> was co-directed by three <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty and graduate students who were educated in the Philippines and at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8212;<strong>Amefil &ldquo;Amy&rdquo; Agbayani<\/strong> (political science), <strong>Sheila Forman<\/strong> (psychology) and <strong>Melinda Tria Kerkvliet<\/strong> (history). They helped create <abbr>OM<\/abbr> with students and community members with the intent to tutor and mentor newly arrived Filipino immigrant students who were often harassed and misunderstood in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s public schools.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;None of us come from an education background, but all of us wanted to do something\/anything to support these students to make their <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> transition smoother and help them become successful in college&rdquo; said Agbayani, emeritus assistant vice chancellor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/diversity\/\">Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity<\/a> (<abbr>SEED<\/abbr>), who retired in 2016 and dedicated her life to creating opportunities for underrepresented students.<\/p>\n<p>An Ilokano term of respect for someone older than you, &ldquo;manong&rdquo; was used by non-Filipinos in a derogatory way for a long time in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Operation Manong reflects the positive designation of &lsquo;manong&rsquo; (older brother) or &lsquo;manang&rsquo; (older sister) for respect and to build a better understanding among the younger generation of Filipinos in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; Agbayani said.<\/p>\n<h2>Expanding support for underrepresented students<\/h2>\n<p>Over the years, <abbr>OM<\/abbr> developed extensive community outreach programs and services for public school and high school students, and expanded its support to include Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and other student groups who were underrepresented at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>One of those students was <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumnus <strong>Leon Florendo<\/strong>, who was with <abbr>OM<\/abbr> as a community college transfer program participant and a tutor\/mentor from 1988 to 1991. Born and raised on the <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> coast, he was the youngest of five children and the only one who went to college. Florendo was a <a href=\"http:\/\/leeward.hawaii.edu\">Leeward Community College<\/a> student who then transferred to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. I met and networked with other Filipino professionals at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and became part of community organizations such as Sariling Gawa Youth Council, Kalihi <abbr>YMCA<\/abbr>, etc.,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>OM<\/abbr>\u2019s outreach initiatives included recruitment activities, conducting campus-based summer programs and addressing other issues identified by communities that hindered students&#8217; education (e.g., youth gangs and substance abuse).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In all these activities, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students were involved not only in implementing the activities, but also in planning and coordinating them,&rdquo; said <strong>Clement Bautista<\/strong>, former director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services, who retired in 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Helping shape futures<\/h2>\n<p>Florendo said <abbr>OM<\/abbr> helped him every step of the way in his college journey. &ldquo;I never felt alone or unsupported. There was always a manong or manang to help me with whatever challenges or difficulties I was experiencing at that time,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Operation Manong contributed to who I am today and for that I am extremely grateful.<br \/>&#8212;Leon Florendo<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Florendo has been a counselor with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System for the past 22 years (14 years at <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulu.hawaii.edu\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a>, eight years with Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>). Now a Kaimuk\u012b resident, he happily drives 73 miles to work to assist students in his home town with their college journeys.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Operation Manong contributed to who I am today and for that I am extremely grateful,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years with budget restraints and new Department of Education policies, <abbr>OM\/OMSS<\/abbr> programming has shifted more to campus-based activities, including coordinating campus tours for public and visiting international schools.
