  {"id":169768,"date":"2022-12-01T09:35:38","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T19:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=169768"},"modified":"2022-12-01T12:43:37","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T22:43:37","slug":"uh-womens-soccer-gift-from-nan-inc-founder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/12\/01\/uh-womens-soccer-gift-from-nan-inc-founder\/","title":{"rendered":"Largest gift in history of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> women\u2019s soccer from Nan Inc. founder"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_169770\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169770\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-wahine-soccer-nan-donation.jpg\" alt=\"five people holding big check\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-169770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-wahine-soccer-nan-donation.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-wahine-soccer-nan-donation-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/manoa-wahine-soccer-nan-donation-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nan &ldquo;Patrick&rdquo; Shin, founder of Nan Inc., gave $50,000 to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> women&#8217;s soccer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> women\u2019s soccer team has received its largest-ever gift, $50,000 from an old friend of the Rainbow Wahine team\u2019s head coach.<\/p>\n<p>Nan Chul &ldquo;Patrick&rdquo; Shin, founder of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> general contracting company Nan Inc., delivered the check to Rainbow Wahine Head Coach <strong>Michele Nagamine<\/strong> in November.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Bud, as Nagamine is known, had reached out to Shin earlier this year to ask if he would give to the Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral nine\">IX<\/abbr> 50th anniversary effort\u2014<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> raised a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/18\/title-ix-50th-anniversary-events\/\">more than $700,000 for women\u2019s athletics<\/a> over the course of three events in September and October.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On a whim, I thought hey I\u2019m going to ask Nan to match $50,000 if I was able to raise $50,000 in honor of 50 years of Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral nine\">IX<\/abbr> and Rainbow Wahine Athletics,&rdquo; Nagamine said. &ldquo;He, fortunately for us, said yes and I was absolutely blown away!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Nagamine has known Shin for more than 30 years. He was just starting his business in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> when she came home from college on the mainland, and the two played soccer within the same circle of friends.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He was a very industrious, hardworking man,&rdquo; she said of Shin, who started his construction company in 1990. &ldquo;I remember him coming to the field in construction clothes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Shin\u2019s gift is unrestricted, and Nagamine said it will support several different areas\u2014from providing healthy snacks and nutrition guidelines to the team to making sure players are able to attend summer school, if needed.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m excited by what this kind of support signifies for our university,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It\u2019s nice to see that people in the community have the 360-vision of what we\u2019re trying to do as a program.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The coach is also interested in starting up a mentoring program\u2014matching her team members with youth programs to get elementary school kids interested early in college.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think our athletes here at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> are excellent role models for the younger generation,&rdquo; Nagamine said. &ldquo;That\u2019s going to pay dividends for both our players and the children they inspire. It\u2019s really important for our student athletes to understand that when they play for <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, they play for the whole state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Nan Inc. has supported other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> programs. In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/nan-inc-donates-160000\">Nan Inc. donated $160,000<\/a> to fund scholarships at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The company.was founded in Honolulu in 1990 by Shin, stemming from the modest dream of a young entrepreneur hoping to help <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> build its future.
