A half Hawaiian young woman returns from the mainland to her birthplace of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> only to be greeted with judgment and shame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/acm\/\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> (<abbr>ACM<\/abbr>) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages and Letters<\/a> are walking away from the 42nd annual <a href=\"https:\/\/hiff.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> International Film Festival<\/a> (<abbr>HIFF<\/abbr>) with invaluable lessons. The short films were made available for online screenings across the globe.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>My Dog Has Fleas<\/em>, directed by <strong>Justin Pascua<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Kites<\/em>, directed by <strong>Debbie Kwon<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Look Up To The Stars<\/em>, directed by <strong>Florence Jane Andres<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Home<\/em>, directed by <strong>Jiwoo Lee<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Cringe Kid Kyle: The Musical<\/em>, directed by <strong>Ian Severino<\/strong> <\/li>\n<li><em>TALA<\/em>, directed by <strong>Justin Ocampo<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Insider\u2019s view<\/h2>\n<p>This fall, an inaugural <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> course also introduced students to different perspectives of a film festival; as participants, filmmakers and event coordinators. The <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> 386 Techniques: Film Festivals course prepared 11 students to shadow <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> organizers this year to get an insider\u2019s view of what it takes to put on the festival. <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> allowed students to participate in areas such as programming, press, marketing, guest services and special events. They were also provided access to the festival screenings and events which allowed them to participate from an audience and filmmaker&#8217;s perspective.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/06\/uh-manoa-film-students-want-you\/\">Be the film critic, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa film students want you<\/a>, October 2022<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Nuts and bolts of the trade<\/h2>\n<p>Six <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> students were also selected to participate in <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr>\u2019s online creators and critics immersive program. The new private mentoring opportunity pairs students with professional critics and content creators to learn how to craft film criticism texts and gain insight on logistics, brand building, sponsorship opportunities and growing audiences. Participants were mentored in writing, podcasting, video essays and vlogging.
