The <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/affiliates\/hilo-center\/ka-pouhana-mentoring-program\/\">Ka Pouhana Mentoring Program<\/a> pairs <abbr title=\"university of hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo student mentors with faculty members to give individualized support to first-year college students. The student mentors presented the program\u2019s objectives at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/ppshi.org\/events\/2022-schools-of-the-future-conference\/\">Schools of the Future Conference<\/a> in October in an effort to showcase how schools statewide can better serve keiki.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_169727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-169727\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hilo-ka-pouhana-conference-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"People sitting at tables in front a screen\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-169727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hilo-ka-pouhana-conference-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hilo-ka-pouhana-conference-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/hilo-ka-pouhana-conference.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-169727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo students present objectives of the new Ka Pouhana Peer Mentoring Program at the Schools of the Future Conference on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The students were able to share both survey results and their personal experience building mentorship relationships with first-year students,&rdquo; said <strong>Helen Tien<\/strong>, a management instructor and academic advisor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s business college. &ldquo;Conference attendees included administrators and teachers from every island and almost every elementary, middle and high school in the state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the Ka Pouhana program, which is based at the Âé¶¹´«Ã½Hilo Center for Place-Based Socioemotional Development, is to tighten the bonds between mentors and first-year university students in order to increase communication, coordination and understanding meant to boost recruitment and retention at the university level.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo students serving as peer mentors include <strong>Catherine Corella<\/strong>, <strong>Ayzlynne-Kalia Fishman-DeVera<\/strong>, <strong>Trevondrick Francis<\/strong>, <strong>Mahina Hanakeawe<\/strong>, <strong><span aria-label=\"Tuupuamalamakahonua\">Tu&#699;upuamalamakahonua<\/span> Helekahi<\/strong>, <strong>Tiffani Napihaa<\/strong>, <strong>Kit Neikirk<\/strong>, <strong>Mekaila Pasco<\/strong>, <strong>Elena-Marie Waianuhe<\/strong> and <strong>Tiffani Napihaa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Ka Pouhana program is led by <strong>Margary Martin<\/strong>, an associate professor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/education\/\">School of Education<\/a> and executive director of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Center for Place-Based Socioemotional Development.
