A new student-led peer mentoring program for Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island highschoolers is taking shape at University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>. The Ka Pouhana Mentoring Program<\/a> pairs UH<\/abbr> Hilo student mentors with faculty members to give individualized support to first-year college students. The student mentors presented the program\u2019s objectives at the annual Schools of the Future Conference<\/a> in October in an effort to showcase how schools statewide can better serve keiki.<\/p>\n

“The students were able to share both survey results and their personal experience building mentorship relationships with first-year students,” said Helen Tien<\/strong>, a management instructor and academic advisor at UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s business college. “Conference attendees included administrators and teachers from every island and almost every elementary, middle and high school in the state.”<\/p>\n

The aim of the Ka Pouhana program, which is based at the Â鶹´«Ã½Hilo Center for Place-Based Socioemotional Development, is to tighten the bonds between mentors and first-year university students in order to increase communication, coordination and understanding meant to boost recruitment and retention at the university level.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> Hilo students serving as peer mentors include Catherine Corella<\/strong>, Ayzlynne-Kalia Fishman-DeVera<\/strong>, Trevondrick Francis<\/strong>, Mahina Hanakeawe<\/strong>, Tuʻupuamalamakahonua<\/span> Helekahi<\/strong>, Tiffani Napihaa<\/strong>, Kit Neikirk<\/strong>, Mekaila Pasco<\/strong>, Elena-Marie Waianuhe<\/strong> and Tiffani Napihaa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Ka Pouhana program is led by Margary Martin<\/strong>, an associate professor at UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s School of Education<\/a> and executive director of the UH<\/abbr> Hilo Center for Place-Based Socioemotional Development. Along with Tien, who is an affiliate faculty at the center, faculty mentors this fall include Instructor Colby MacNaughton<\/strong> (Education), Professor Celia Bardwell-Jones<\/strong> (Philosophy), Instructor Jenni Guillen<\/strong> (Biology), Associate Professor John Burns<\/strong> (Marine Science), Associate Professor Michael Peterson<\/strong> (Computer Science) and Associate Professor Misty Pacheco<\/strong> (Kinesiology and Exercise Science).<\/p>\n

The Ka Pouhana Mentoring Program is funded by Oak Foundation Fund<\/a> at the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n
