Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) is preparing to plant roots on the Garden Isle. A year ago, Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg helped launch a new training track for medical students on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span>, enabling <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> to expand education and health care and have a more prolonged and impactful presence there. The first cohort of students will begin their studies on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> in March.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/23\/kauai-med-training-track-launch\/\">First students start <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> medical training program<\/a>, August 2022<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are two halves of a medical student\u2019s journey. The first two years are devoted to classroom learning, while on-location clinical training makes up the second half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> has always had students centered in <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O\u02bbahu<\/span>, and they do almost all their training here. There are some opportunities in the first year to go to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> or <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L\u0101na\u02bbi<\/span>,\u201d said <strong>Travis Hong<\/strong>, the director of rural training at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>. \u201cIn their third or fourth year, students can go to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span>, Maui or <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Island. That\u2019s been the extent of student experiences on the neighbor islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Planting roots<\/h2>\n<p>Each year, six students will learn and reside on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> for the next five years. The first cohort includes <strong>Jaime Emoto<\/strong>, <strong>Erin Evangelista<\/strong>, <strong>Dylan Lawton<\/strong>, <strong>Kirra Borrello<\/strong>, <strong>Ivana Yoon<\/strong> and <strong>Brent Fujimoto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O\u02bbahu<\/span> curriculum in the medical school will be translated over to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span>. Lectures will be conducted virtually, but we\u2019ll have an onsite physician doing the same Problem Based Learning tutorials and curricular activities with the students, so it\u2019s really the same experience on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O\u02bbahu<\/span>,\u201d Hong said.<\/p>\n<p>When students enter their clinical years, they will treat patients on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents in their third year will spend at least six months on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span>, rotating through primary care, which includes pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, <abbr title=\"obstetrics and gynecology\">OBGYN<\/abbr>, surgery and psychiatry,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is what every <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> student does. This group will just do it on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Electives and different specialties are reserved for medical students\u2019 fourth year. <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> Medical Training Track students will do two elective months, and two required months in emergency medicine and geriatrics on Kaua\u02bbi.<\/p>\n<h2>Post-residency commitment on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg grant provides the medical training track students with a full, four-year scholarship to <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, but it comes with a promise that ensures <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> residents will also reap the benefits of the grant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ultimately our goal is to have these students return to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> and practice and start to do a small part in managing the physician shortage on the island.<br \/>\n\u2014Travis Hong<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWork commitment,\u201d Hong said. \u201cOnce they finish residency training, they must return to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua\u02bbi<\/span> for at least four years to practice as independent physicians. There\u2019s no mandatory specialty they have to go into. We encourage primary care because that\u2019s the greatest need for underserved areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While primary care physicians are needed statewide, students are able to take a different route.
