The professional shoot took more than nine hours and featured Lopes dancing her award-winning hula kahiko (ancient dance) in traditional <span aria-label=\"aahu\">a&#699;ahu<\/span> (costume) and an array of images wearing items from Nike\u2019s new N7 fall collection.<\/p>\n<p>Nike officials expressed to Lopes how much they appreciated her authenticity and commitment to ensuring the campaign was culturally appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Whoever is representing any brand that\u2019s featuring an Indigenous culture, I just want to make sure that they hold their loina (customs) <span aria-label=\"paa\">pa&#699;a<\/span> (strong)&#8230;Just stick to your gut,&rdquo; Lopes explained.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Paahana\">Pa&#699;ahana<\/span> (hard work) to the core<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168925\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168925\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-lopes-nike-clothes-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Two women standing outside near the ocean\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-lopes-nike-clothes-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-lopes-nike-clothes-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-lopes-nike-clothes.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The advertising campaign was filmed in Leeward <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> at M\u0101kaha Beach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lopes earned a <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language) from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Â鶹´«Ã½nu&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> and is busy working on a <abbr>MA<\/abbr> in teaching degree and is on track to graduate in spring 2023. She is currently gaining field work experience at Roosevelt High School teaching first and fourth year &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> haum\u0101na. The 22-year-old is the daughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kawaihuelani\/\">Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language<\/a> Director <strong>R. Keawe Lopes, Jr.<\/strong>, who is also her kumu hula (hula teacher) alongside her mother, <strong>Tracie<\/strong> of h\u0101lau (hula school) Ka L\u0101 &#699;\u014cnohi Mai O <span aria-label=\"Haehae\">Ha&#699;eha&#699;e<\/span>. Her mother also captured the Miss Aloha Hula title in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Lopes, who is fluent in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s mother tongue, also won a Hawaiian Language Award while competing in the Miss Aloha Hula competition at Merrie Monarch, for her mastery of \u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> during the oli (chant) portion of the performance. Lopes\u2019 use of the language impressed many spectators and &#699;\u014dlapa hula (hula dancers).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s how I was raised and how I went through life and how my parents taught hula, how my parents taught language and spoke language at home,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>And the beat goes on<\/h2>\n<p>When you don\u2019t find her dancing or teaching high schoolers, chances are good you\u2019ll find her in the gym. Those closest to her know it\u2019s like a second hale (home). Lopes is a competitive powerlifter who has four state records under her belt in bench press and deadlift. She\u2019s preparing for an upcoming competition in mid-November.<\/p>\n<p>On top of powerlifting, Nike photoshoots and graduate school, she still manages to cram jet setting the Pacific into a very packed schedule.
