Funding has continuously been provided from the <abbr>NCI<\/abbr> for the study\u2019s exceptional contributions.<\/p>\n<p>The joint effort between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> and the University of Southern California (<abbr>USC<\/abbr>) <a href=\"https:\/\/uscnorriscancer.usc.edu\/\">Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a> is now in its 28th year to utilize the ethnic and cultural diversity of these two geographical areas, as well as the expertise of the investigators in nutrition, health disparities and genetics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136210\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136210\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cancer-center-mec-presentation-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"woman pointing to presentation board surrounded by people\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-136210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cancer-center-mec-presentation-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cancer-center-mec-presentation-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/cancer-center-mec-presentation.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Researcher Unhee Lim shares findings on obesity and cancer at <abbr title=\"multiethnic cohort\">MEC<\/abbr> Study 25th Anniversary celebration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The grant renewal will make possible the further follow-up of <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study participants for a number of new studies that will continue to build on our efforts to understand health disparities and improve the prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center researcher <strong>Lo\u0457c Le Marchand<\/strong>, principal investigator of the <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year renewal will allow the study of additional health conditions more common in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, such as visceral obesity and liver cancer, and new areas such as social determinants of health, health effects of climate change and genetic risk prediction.<\/p>\n<p>Co-principal investigators of the <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study are <strong>Lynne Wilkens<\/strong> of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center, and Christopher Haiman of <abbr>USC<\/abbr>\u2019s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<h2>More on the <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study<\/h2>\n<p>The study cohort includes men and women of five main ethnic\/racial populations: Japanese Americans, Native Hawaiians, African Americans, Latinos and whites. Researchers have been following this cohort to examine how the members, who develop cancer or other diseases, differed in various risk factors several years before diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 2000\u2019s, the study expanded to include a biorepository containing more than 2.5 million biological specimens (mainly blood and urine samples) from more than 75,000 <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study participants.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study has resulted in more than 950 peer-reviewed scientific articles on a wide range of topics, including smoking, diet, physical activity, obesity, hormones, environmental contaminants and genetic predisposition.
