The fixed, low cost of the trip opened the door for underserved students, some of whom had never left <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, to gain an invaluable experience halfway around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019ve just been really immersed in some of the lessons that have been taught to us,&rdquo; said student <strong>Niccalis Cruz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Consisting of students from three cohorts of the Lunalilo Scholars (2019, 2020 and 2021), the group journeyed from Honolulu to Dublin to Donegal County in the northwestern corner of Ireland. There, they packed in days of learning and exploring, starting each morning with formal lectures by Niamh Hamill, director of the Institute of Study Abroad Ireland, before journeying out to a site visit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;(I\u2019m) So lucky to be here and to experience the excitement and the learning and the awe that the students are experiencing,&rdquo; said <strong>LaVache Scanlan<\/strong>, director of the Lunalilo Scholars Program. &ldquo;The smiles on their faces, the &lsquo;aha&rsquo; moments, and all of that is just really cool to experience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Ireland, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> connections<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168535\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"A line of surfers headed out into the ocean\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Surf lessons in the chilly North Atlantic Ocean of Ireland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each day was focused on a unique topic; one lecture was given on Irish civil rights, social justice and conflict resolution before an afternoon guided visit to Derry City in Northern Ireland and a walk within the old historic walls dating back to the early 17th century. Another day focused on women\u2019s rights, and another on sustainability and discussions on Irish welfare and healthcare systems all while tying them back to social, political, environmental and economic issues that Lunalilo Scholars have witnessed and experienced in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Students also got their toes wet with surf lessons in the chilly North Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They\u2019re all at different stages of development, and this experience will help them learn about themselves and also the world and how they can maybe contribute as citizens to the world,&rdquo; Scanlan said.<\/p>\n<p>The lectures pointed out the parallels between Ireland and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, from the treatment of Indigenous people there and Native Hawaiians here and the impacts of colonization.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I thought it was interesting to learn about the similarities within the colonization of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and how closely it\u2019s connected to the colonization of the Irish people and also many other Indigenous peoples around the world,&rdquo; said student <strong>Kaulanakealoha Aipa-Dolan<\/strong>. &ldquo;So (I\u2019m) just really grateful to expand on that topic and get to know more about what other people go through.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Lunalilo, Queen <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> scholarships combine<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168538\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-5-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"Group of smiling people\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-5-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-5-130x93.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kapiolani-lunalilo-ireland-5.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students, staff, and faculty in Ireland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/kapiolani.padlet.org\/lavache1\/iil313e6d1pzrzt1\">study-abroad opportunity<\/a> was privately funded through the scholarships at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. Lester and Marian Kaneta, founding donors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/give\/giving-opportunity\/lunalilo-scholars-building-community-connecting-hearts\">Lunalilo Scholars Program<\/a>, generously supported the travel opportunity to help expand the horizons of the students\u2019 perspectives. The second source of funding came from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/impact\/students\/beyond-books\">Queen <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> International Travel Scholars Endowed Fund<\/a>, established by a donation from Chancellor <strong>Louise Pagotto<\/strong> in 2019. She envisioned for students\u2019 educational journeys to go beyond the books.
