(Photo credit: Brad Goda)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Awards for a competition introducing students to the strength and beauty of local woods that are sustainably produced in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s<\/span> forests went to University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a> students. (Photo credit: Brad Goda)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr>I+I<\/abbr> Student Challenge allows students to learn about the proper ways to design for wood, and how to safely use all the tools they need to reach their own creative expression. <span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu\u02bbuhonua<\/span> Society, a community arts organization that supports artists and cultural practitioners who are rooted in the value system of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> nei, supported the <abbr>I+I<\/abbr> Student Challenge by visiting the show and recognizing students with their own set of awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipating in the <abbr>I+I<\/abbr> Student Challenge is an important opportunity for students because they can learn so much while having fun and being creative, and <span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu\u02bbuhonua<\/span> Society has gone on to contribute ongoing sponsorship of awards for these young designers and artists,\u201d said <strong>Steve Hill<\/strong>, director of the fabrication laboratory in the School of Architecture. \u201cBy working with a selection of woods grown right here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Hawai\u02bbi,<\/span> they can begin to understand the importance of this living natural resource.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Puuhonua\">Pu\u02bbuhonua<\/span> Society student award winners:<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168230\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-architecture-nakamori-birdhouse-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"wood piece\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-architecture-nakamori-birdhouse-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-architecture-nakamori-birdhouse-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-architecture-nakamori-birdhouse.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cA Bird House,\u201d by Beau Nakamori. (Photo credit: Brad Goda)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Kiana Dai<\/strong> won an Ano of Excellence award for her piece \u201cWhere the Light Shines Through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring <abbr title=\"coronavirus\">COVID-19<\/abbr>, almost everything we produced for our classes was digital, and learning how to design with wood has been a refreshing new way to express myself as a designer,\u201d said Dai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Griffin Ward<\/strong> won an Ano of Excellence award for his piece \u201cValley of Light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had an amazing experience and got to meet a bunch of intriguing artists and woodworkers,\u201d Ward said. \u201cI think it was important to explore a more artistic side to architecture, one where you are not fixated on codes and a budget but can really focus on how your piece is experienced by others.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>I+I<\/abbr> Student Challenge winners:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Beau Nakamori<\/strong> won first place in the I+I Student Challenge for his piece \u201cA Bird House,\u201d which was crafted entirely from local woods.
