  {"id":167920,"date":"2022-10-25T10:02:36","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T20:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=167920"},"modified":"2022-10-25T10:03:29","modified_gmt":"2022-10-25T20:03:29","slug":"community-health-worker-training-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/25\/community-health-worker-training-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Community health worker training expansion aids underserved communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_167916\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167916\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program.jpg\" alt=\"Three people looking at a piece of paper\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-167916\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr title=\"Community Health Worker\">CHW<\/abbr>s function as patient advocates and educate their community on healthcare resources.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A $1.29 million grant will address health disparities for people living in economically and medically under-resourced communities in the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> through a project called <em><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College&#8217;s Community Health Worker Training Program (<abbr>CHWTP<\/abbr>): Removing Barriers to Care in Urban Polynesia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/10\/18\/ethnic-disparities-health-wf-funds\/\">$11.3 million the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is receiving<\/a> from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support programs and research that aim to reduce racial and ethnic disparities and boost <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s health care workforce.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> project, funded by Health Resources &#38; Services Administration\u2019s Community Health Worker Training Program of President Joe Biden\u2019s American Rescue Plan Act, will expand training to new community health workers (<abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s), extend existing <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> skills through Emergency Medical Technician training, and deploy <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s to address areas of higher social vulnerability to improve health equity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/academics\/programs-of-study\/community-health-worker\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>\u2019s Community Health Worker Training Program<\/a> serves as a bridge between the formal health system and vulnerable communities in the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. This federal grant provides the resources <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> needs to leverage our health academic program&#8217;s expertise and expand its reach into the communities we serve,&rdquo; said Principal Investigator <strong>Maria Bautista<\/strong>, interim vice chancellor for academic affairs. &ldquo;We honor Queen <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>&#8216;s vision to provide education and access to proper quality health care to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s most vulnerable communities through this project.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Statewide <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> training<\/h2>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College Health Worker Training Program is a 16-credit training program with an ongoing statewide recruitment from local communities. Since 2019, more than 50% of students were from environmentally, economically, and\/or educationally disadvantaged communities including 100% of students (33 of 33) enrolled from 2019&#8211;20, and 73% of students (112 of 153) enrolled from 2020&#8211;21. The expansion of the program from 2020 and beyond came through the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Health-<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Contact Tracing Training Program, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhealthy.hawaii.edu\/\">UHealthy Hawaii Initiative<\/a>, whose staff and programs were leveraged as a foundation for this grant.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Cohorts for this program will come from residents of environmentally, economically or educationally disadvantaged communities and will include Native Hawaiian, Chuukese and Marshallese students, first generation college students, housing project residents and student from the highest areas of social vulnerability in <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L&#257;na&#699;i<\/span>, Maui, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island,&rdquo; said <strong>Joey Dewater<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Community Health Worker Program coordinator.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_167917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167917\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program-recruitment.jpg\" alt=\"Woman presenting next to a screen\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-167917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program-recruitment.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-community-health-worker-training-program-recruitment-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CHWP supports students statewide with a focus on recruitment from communities that are often underrepresented.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The program aims to prepare 30 participants annually and includes an apprenticeship with employers that leads to long-term employment.<\/p>\n<p>On <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> participants will complete the Certificate of Competence training in-person and through external partnerships with <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast Comprehensive Health Center and K\u014dkua Kalihi Valley. The areas of <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> and Kalihi Valley rank among the highest for social vulnerability in the state with large populations of Native Hawaiians, Chuukese and Marshallese residents in public housing projects.<\/p>\n<p>Participants from the islands of <span aria-label=\"Lanai\">L&#257;na&#699;i<\/span>, Maui, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> will complete their training online. The neighbor islands face unique challenges recruiting healthcare professionals and reaching remote communities ranking the highest in social vulnerability.<\/p>\n<h2>Emergency Medical Technician training<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the expansion of <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> training, the program will aim to extend the skills of 10 practicing <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s with a full-time 19.6-credit Emergency Medical Technician (<abbr>EMT<\/abbr>) training to obtain an <abbr>EMT<\/abbr> state license. After completing the courses, students will be placed on ambulances in their local areas to complete 350 hours of paid clinical training, with a goal of full-time employment as a <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>EMT<\/abbr>. <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>EMT<\/abbr>s will be hired on ambulances in order to reduce the number of preventable 911 calls and transports, delivering <abbr>CHW<\/abbr> services to common 911 utilizers: k\u016bpuna (elders), unsheltered community members and those in a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We worked with our community partners to come up with a program to train community members in place, and respond to a shortage of <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s and community paramedicine trained <abbr>EMT<\/abbr>s,&rdquo; said Dewater. &ldquo;This program was created directly from their feedback. We are very proud of the program we&#8217;ve put together and are excited to get to work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/academics\/programs-of-study\/community-health-worker\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College Health Worker Training Program<\/a> will begin its next statewide course series in January 2023.
