Architects compete for private clients and public works through requests for proposals or through design competitions. In the design of built environments, students need to become aware of the importance of clearly communicating their ideas visually without verbal explanations, and the impact of craft, discipline and rigor in their work,\u201d said <strong>Karla Sierralta<\/strong>, studio coordinator and associate professor in the School of Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>This is the seventh annual \u2018Spatial Explorations Design Competition.\u2019 Over the years more than 500 students have participated since its first iteration in 2016, making more than 2,000 models.<\/p>\n<p>The class ARCH 101 Design Fundamentals Studio I is taught by Sierralta, <strong>Vincent Au<\/strong>, <strong>Yuliya Bencheva<\/strong>, and <strong>Willa Trimble<\/strong> with teaching assistants <strong>Brandi Baligad<\/strong>, <strong>Bryson Tabaniag<\/strong>, <strong>Austin Torralba<\/strong> and <strong>Melissa Yoo<\/strong>. This semester, 109 students made more than 436 models, and 20 models were selected for jury deliberations. A jury of guest design critics and architects selected seven noteworthy projects. Three awards for the best set and four awards for the best model were given.<\/p>\n<h2>Competition winners<\/h2>\n<p>Best set:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First place &#8211; <strong>Caitlin Munar<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Second place &#8211; <strong>Zane Steely<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Third place &#8211; <strong>Olivia Akina<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Best individual model:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Linear &#8211; <strong>Lena Li<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mass &#8211; <strong>Leylia Wurthner<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hybrid &#8211; <strong>Armando Alegria<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hybrid &#8211; <strong>Benjamin Vickland<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=&#8221;3&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1666125762520-eb86fd98-4610-5&#8243; include=&#8221;167367,167369,167372,167373,167374,167375,167376&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n<h2>Students draw architectural inspiration<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cDespite its many challenges, I felt that the competition was invigorating,\u201d said <strong>Caitlin Munar<\/strong>, first-year architecture student. \u201cMy favorite part was the galleries where we would walk around to view everyone&#8217;s projects. It was interesting to see what other students were doing and how they were able to execute it.
