The musicians played on historical Hawaiian <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;ukulele<\/span> and guitars, some of which dated back to the era of the Hawaiian Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auw.org\/\">Aloha United Way<\/a> fundraiser was a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/ukulelefriend.com\/museum\/\"><span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;Ukulele<\/span> Friend<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcpstrings.com\/\">Kealakai Center for Pacific Strings<\/a>. The event &ldquo;A Century of Hawaiian Strings: A Concert featuring Historic <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;Ukulele<\/span> &#38; Guitar Played in a Variety of Styles,&rdquo; coordinated by the Paul S. Honda International Center at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, was live-streamed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aCmz_l8KSNQ\">recorded<\/a> for virtual attendees to enjoy from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a new and exciting fundraiser and the first ever of its kind with the breadth of musicians performing, the significance of the historical instruments, and the opportunity for the campus and community to come together and raise awareness of those in need in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. It was a wonderful gathering to celebrate music, history and community,&rdquo; said <strong>Shawn Yacavone<\/strong>, an educational specialist with the Paul S. Honda International Center. &ldquo;We are very fortunate to have this as part of our fundraising efforts for Aloha United Way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_167226\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167226\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-ukulele-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two people playing music\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-ukulele-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-ukulele-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/kapiolani-ukulele-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Musicians David Woodward and Halehaku Seabury play on historical &#699;ukulele and guitar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than just a concert, the introduction of the instruments, the luthiers (those who make stringed instruments), the music and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/hawaii.edu\/auwkcc\/misicansbio\">the musicians<\/a> provided an educational journey of Hawaiian music history since the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>A treasure trove of historical <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;ukulele<\/span> and guitar dating between 1884 to 1932, on loan from <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;Ukulele<\/span> Friend and the Kealakai Center for Pacific Strings, were also proudly displayed in the campus cafeteria.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the highlights included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The personal guitar of Prince Jonah K\u016bhi\u014d <span aria-label=\"Kalanianaole\">Kalaniana&#699;ole<\/span>, handcrafted in 1911 by Manuel Nunes. Manuel Nunes is one of three Maderians (along with Jose do Espirito Santo and Augusto Dias) credited with the creation of the <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;ukulele<\/span> in the late 1800s.<\/li>\n<li>The <span aria-label=\"Kealakai\">Kealaka&#699;i<\/span> Jumbo Martin guitar (replica), made in 1915 for Major <span aria-label=\"Kealakai\">Kealaka&#699;i<\/span> who was a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span>. This was the prototype for the modern-day Martin Dreadnought, a widely used and famous acoustic guitar.<\/li>\n<li>David Kaio played Hawaiian slack key on a Martin D-18 Dreadnought guitar previously owned by famed local musician Gabby Pahinui.
