The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa College of Social Sciences<\/a> (CSS<\/abbr>) honors the legacy of the late U.S. Sen<\/abbr>. Daniel K<\/abbr>. Inouye (DKI<\/abbr>) through faculty and graduate student research grants that recognize his indelible mark on the state and work to shape the U.S. into a more tolerant and inclusive society.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> Hilo Assistant Professor and 2020 DKI<\/abbr> fellow Leanne Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Leanne P. Day<\/strong>, an assistant professor of English at UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and a research affiliate in the CSS<\/abbr> Department of Ethnic Studies<\/a>, was the inaugural DKI<\/abbr> faculty research fellow in 2020. Day\u2019s research project was titled, “Gestures of Apology, Reparations, and Comparative Racial Formations in Senator Daniel K<\/abbr>. Inouye\u2019s Congressional Papers.”<\/p>\n

“My research focused on the still unresolved issue of 2,300 Latin American Japanese who were forcibly deported and incarcerated in U.S. detention centers under suspicion of being Japanese spies, and Filipino veterans who served in World War II<\/abbr> and did not receive full veterans\u2019 benefits,” said Day. “My most exciting research findings were the fascinating declassified intelligence documents from World War II<\/abbr> that articulated the strategic moves to forcibly deport Latin American Japanese, and how the Senator referenced these documents as ‘an extraordinary effort by the U.S. government’ to relocate, intern and deport them.”<\/p>\n

The 2022 DKI<\/abbr> fellow is Colin Moore<\/strong>, chair of the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa School of Communication and Information<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Applications now accepted<\/h2>\n

To commemorate the advancement of democracy, public policy and good government, faculty researchers and UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate students may apply for $5,000 grants through the CSS<\/abbr> DKI<\/abbr> Fellows Program<\/a> and DKI<\/abbr> Graduate Archival Research Grant<\/a>. The application deadline for both is November 30, 2022.<\/p>\n

Selected fellows and graduate students will conduct archival research using DKI<\/abbr> collections housed at the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Library\u2019s Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Congressional Papers Collection<\/a>: Daniel K<\/abbr>. Inouye Papers<\/a>; and UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>\u2019s ʻUluʻulu<\/span>: The Henry Kuʻualoha<\/span> Giugni Moving Image Archive of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a>. Selected fellows are faculty researchers who will be in residence at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, such as Day.<\/p>\n

“We are proud that the college houses the Daniel K<\/abbr>. Inouye Initiative<\/a>, which is the hub for programs like the Congressional Archives Internship, Distinguished Visiting Scholar and special events,” said CSS<\/abbr> Dean Denise Eby Konan<\/strong>. “The initiative is a living tribute to the man whose public service leadership, democratic ideals and global awareness remain relevant and impactful years after his passing. We are especially grateful to our partnership with the Daniel K<\/abbr>. Inouye Institute, which makes this possible.”<\/p>\n

The Daniel K<\/abbr>. Inouye Institute was established in 2013 to preserve Inouye\u2019s papers and tell his life story; support STEM<\/abbr> education, civics learning and international educational-cultural exchanges; and establish a repository of the Asian American\/Pacific experience.<\/p>\n
