Inouye<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>) honors the legacy of the late U.S. <abbr title=\"Senator\">Sen<\/abbr>. Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Day<\/strong>, an assistant professor of English at <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and a research affiliate in the <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Ethnic Studies<\/a>, was the inaugural <abbr>DKI<\/abbr> faculty research fellow in 2020. Day\u2019s research project was titled, &ldquo;Gestures of Apology, Reparations, and Comparative Racial Formations in Senator Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Inouye\u2019s Congressional Papers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My research focused on the still unresolved issue of 2,300 Latin American Japanese who were forcibly deported and incarcerated in U.S. detention centers under suspicion of being Japanese spies, and Filipino veterans who served in World War <abbr title=\"Roman numeral two\">II<\/abbr> and did not receive full veterans\u2019 benefits,&rdquo; said Day. &ldquo;My most exciting research findings were the fascinating declassified intelligence documents from World War <abbr title=\"Roman numeral two\">II<\/abbr> that articulated the strategic moves to forcibly deport Latin American Japanese, and how the Senator referenced these documents as &lsquo;an extraordinary effort by the U.S. government&rsquo; to relocate, intern and deport them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 <abbr>DKI<\/abbr> fellow is <strong>Colin Moore<\/strong>, chair of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communication and Information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Applications now accepted<\/h2>\n<p>To commemorate the advancement of democracy, public policy and good government, faculty researchers and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate students may apply for $5,000 grants through the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/research-and-innovation\/dki-initiative\/dki-fellows-program\/\"><abbr>CSS<\/abbr> <abbr>DKI<\/abbr> Fellows Program<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/research-and-innovation\/dki-initiative\/dki-graduate-archival-research-grant\/\"><abbr>DKI<\/abbr> Graduate Archival Research Grant<\/a>. The application deadline for both is November 30, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Selected fellows and graduate students will conduct archival research using <abbr>DKI<\/abbr> collections housed at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/library\/research\/collections\/archives\/hawaii-congressional-papers-collection\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Congressional Papers Collection<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/library\/research\/collections\/archives\/hawaii-congressional-papers-collection\/daniel-k-inouye-papers\/\">Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Inouye Papers<\/a>; and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/uluulu.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span>: The Henry <span aria-label=\"Kuualoha\">Ku&#699;ualoha<\/span> Giugni Moving Image Archive of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a>. Selected fellows are faculty researchers who will be in residence at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, such as Day.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are proud that the college houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/research-and-innovation\/dki-initiative\/\">Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Inouye Initiative<\/a>, which is the hub for programs like the Congressional Archives Internship, Distinguished Visiting Scholar and special events,&rdquo; said <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong>. &ldquo;The initiative is a living tribute to the man whose public service leadership, democratic ideals and global awareness remain relevant and impactful years after his passing. We are especially grateful to our partnership with the Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Inouye Institute, which makes this possible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Inouye Institute was established in 2013 to preserve Inouye\u2019s papers and tell his life story; support <abbr title=\"Science Technology Engineering Mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> education, civics learning and international educational-cultural exchanges; and establish a repository of the Asian American\/Pacific experience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Senator Inouye was a proud alumnus of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa,&rdquo; said <strong>Jennifer Sabas<\/strong>, director of the Daniel <abbr>K<\/abbr>.
